Former “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart didn’t hold back in his criticism of Donald Trump’s performance during the first presidential debate, specifically targeting his response to the January 6th insurrection. Stewart, a vocal critic of Trump, called the former president’s attempt to downplay the attack on the Capitol “disgusting” and “a betrayal of the country.”

In an interview with “The View,” Stewart described Trump’s stance as “beyond comprehension,” emphasizing the severity of the attack and its potential to undermine democracy. He argued that Trump’s actions were an attempt to “delegitimize” the democratic process and undermine the rule of law.

Stewart, however, commended Vice President Kamala Harris’ response to the issue, calling her “very clear” and “powerful.” He particularly praised Harris’ handling of the abortion debate, stating, “She crushed that,” referencing her concise and impactful arguments in defense of reproductive rights.

Stewart’s comments reflect the sentiment of many who watched the debate, with many viewers criticizing Trump’s avoidance of responsibility and praising Harris’ assertive and articulate presentation.

“It’s a real shame that we have to have these conversations,” Stewart lamented, highlighting the continued divide and animosity that has plagued American politics. He also emphasized the need for a “serious conversation” about the state of democracy and the importance of upholding the rule of law.

With the election nearing, Stewart’s remarks underscore the ongoing debate surrounding Trump’s legacy and the future of American democracy, prompting a renewed focus on the critical issues at stake.
