India’s ‘Pink City’ Is a Feast for the Senses — Here Are the Best Things to Do in Jaipur

Nestled in the heart of Rajasthan, India, Jaipur is often referred to as the ‘Pink City’ for its iconic rosy-hued buildings. This stunning urban sprawl is not just a treat for the eyes but also a playground for the senses, offering a myriad of experiences that encapsulate the rich cultural legacy of India. Here are some of the best things to do in Jaipur that should be on every traveler’s itinerary.

Firstly, a visit to the majestic Hawa Mahal, or “Palace of Winds,” is essential. This iconic structure with its intricate lattice windows offers a panoramic view of the city and was once used by royal ladies to observe street festivities while remaining unseen. Next on your journey should be the opulent City Palace, which blends Rajasthani and Mughal architectural influences, reflecting Jaipur’s royal past.

The Amber Fort, located just outside Jaipur, presents an eye-catching blend of Hindu and Mughal styles. Visitors can indulge in an elephant ride to the fort’s entrance, though there are also jeep and walking options available. The Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace) inside Amber Fort is particularly noteworthy for its walls adorned with mirror mosaics and colored glasses.

For those interested in astronomy and architecture, Jantar Mantar is a must-see destination. It houses a collection of nineteen architectural astronomical instruments built by Rajput king Sawai Jai Singh II and has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Shopping enthusiasts will relish exploring the bustling bazaars such as Johari Bazaar and Bapu Bazaar, which are famous for their jewelry, especially those crafted with precious gemstones, fabrics including bandhej (tie-dye), leheriya (wave pattern) textiles, traditional footwear (mojaris), and a range of handcrafted goods.

Moreover, lovers of art and culture can immerse themselves in Rajasthan’s folk heritage at Chokhi Dhani Village Fair—an open-air restaurant-cum-fairground that offers live music, dance performances, camel rides, fortune-telling parrots, and savory Rajasthani cuisine within an authentic village setting.

For relaxation amidst nature, escape to the beautifully laid-out gardens like Sisodia Rani Ka Bagh or Central Park, which provide ample green space and tranquility amid the bustling cityscape.

Finally, no trip to Jaipur would be complete without savoring the local cuisine. Do try out delicacies like Ghewar (a sweet dish), Dal Baati Churma (lentils served with baked wheat balls), Kachori (snack filled with spicy fillings), accompanied by lassi in earthen cups to keep cool in the desert heat.

Jaipur captivates visitors through its spectrum of historical landmarks, vibrant markets, enticing cuisines, and lively cultural expressions. Each experience in this city feels like adrift through a kaleidoscope of tradition and modernity—the quintessential Indian urban tale. Whether you’re seeking adventure or tranquility, Jaipur promises an unforgettable sensory feast that remains etched in memory long after you’ve departed its pink embrace.
