How to Use a Defibrillator: 11 Steps

1. Assess the situation: Ensure the person is unresponsive, not breathing, and without a pulse. Call emergency services immediately.
2. Retrieve the defibrillator: Quickly locate the nearest automated external defibrillator (AED) device.
3. Power on the AED: Turn on the device by pressing the power button or opening the lid, depending on the model.
4. Expose the chest: Remove any clothing from the patient’s chest, ensuring there is no obstruction for the AED pads.
5. Attach electrodes: Open the AED pad package and adhere them to the patient’s bare chest according to the illustrations—typically, one on the upper right side of their chest (just below their collarbone) and one on their lower left side (below their armpit).
6. Plug in connectors (if needed): Some machines may require you to plug in connectors after attaching pads to ensure proper electrical connection.
7. Clear patient: Ensure that no one is touching or has any contact with the patient during analysis and shock delivery. Announce “Stand clear!” before proceeding.
8. Analyze heart rhythm: Press the analyze button on the AED, allowing it to assess if a shock is necessary.
9. Follow voice prompts: The AED will either instruct you to administer a shock or advise you to continue with CPR.
10. Deliver shock (if advised): If prompted, press the flashing shock button on the device and ensure no one is touching the patient during this process.
11. Continue CPR: After delivering a shock or receiving instructions not to from the AED, proceed with CPR until emergency help arrives or further instructions are given by emergency personnel.
