How to Upgrade Install macOS Sierra Safely on Your Mac

Apple’s macOS Sierra offers an impressive array of features and updates for Mac users. Updated from the previous versions, a better Siri, iCloud integration, and Apple Pay on the desktop are some of the salient and noteworthy improvements that are worth upgrading. It is important to ensure a safe upgrade of the OS so let’s dive into how to do just that.

Back up your macOS

The first step before upgrading your macOS is to quickly go through your data and back it up. Roll up your most essential files, folder and documents and back them up onto an external hard drive. A Time Machine Backup or iCloud Drive will also work favorably as they restore computer settings, files, and settings to their original state, enabling you to jump back in case the upgrade doesn’t work out.

Check for Compatibility issues

While macOS Sierra is compatible with a wide range of Macs, certain Mac models might not support it. Macs launched prior to 2010, for instance, may not be able to upgrade to Sierra. It is thus important to check the compatibility of your Mac ahead of updating to avoid challenges. To check, click the Apple menu in the top left corner of the screen, proceed to ‘About This Mac,’ and click on the overview tab. Here you’ll see the compatibility details of your operating system and can verify if your Mac is compatible.

Clear Space for the Operating System

The next step is to make sure there is enough space for macOS Sierra on your Mac. Open your Mac’s storage under ‘About This Mac’ to determine how much space is available. If there is not enough space, deleted items such as videos, downloaded files, or photographs can be cleared up that are no longer needed. Alternatively, you could transfer some of your files to another device.

Install macOS Sierra

With a backup made and space cleared up, you’re ready to get started. Go to the App Store, search for ‘macOS Sierra’, and download it for free unless you already have it. Next, open your downloads folder, and double-click on the macOS Sierra file, then follow the instructions to install. This process can take a few minutes or a few hours depending on your internet connection speed and the available space on your Mac.

It is essential to upgrade to macOS Sierra to benefit from the latest and upgraded features. However, the safety of the upgrade should take priority over initiating the process. Backing up data, checking for compatibility issues, and clearing up space are essential aspects of the process to ensure optimum safety. Once these three steps are achieved, the actual upgrade process shouldn’t take much time, and your Mac will have access to the features of the new OS.
