How to Turn a Blanket Into a Coat
Introduction:
Transforming a blanket into a coat is not only an ingenious way to upcycle an old or unused item, but it’s also a fantastic way to stay warm and stylish during colder months. The process is simple, and with just a little bit of sewing knowledge, you can create a one-of-a-kind, cozy outerwear piece. Follow these step-by-step instructions, and you’ll be sporting your new blanket coat in no time!
Materials:
– Blanket (preferably a larger size for adequate coverage)
– Measuring tape
– Scissors
– Sewing machine or needle and thread
– Pins
– Buttons and buttonholes or other closure options (optional)
Step 1: Measure and Cut
First, lay your blanket out on a flat surface, smoothing any wrinkles or folds. Using the measuring tape, determine the center of the blanket, as this will be the starting point for your coat design.
Next, measure the length you want your coat to be, from your shoulder down to your desired length. Mark this measurement on both edges of the folded blanket and cut off any excess fabric.
Step 2: Create the Neckline and Armholes
Now that your blanket is cut to size, it’s time to create a neckline. At the center of the top edge of the blanket, cut an arch shape about 6 to 8 inches wide – this will serve as the neckline.
To create armholes, measure about 9 inches from each side of the neckline along the top edge and mark with pins. From that point measure down around 8-10 inches and place another pin to mark where arms will fit into. Draw lines at each of these areas to form rounded shapes similar to ‘J’ shapes on both sides and cut them out accordingly.
Step 3: Sewing or Stitching
At this point fold the blanket back in half, lining up the edges. If you’re using a sewing machine, sew along the sides and top edges by stitching about 1/2 inch from the edge of the blanket. Be sure to leave openings for the armholes and the neckline.
For those that are hand-sewing, use a simple running stitch to attach these edges together, ensuring that each stitch is secure. A tight whip stitch can also be used to finish off your blanket coat with a decorative touch.
Step 4: Finishing Touches
Now it’s time to make your coat even more unique and functional by adding closures such as buttons or snaps. You may also wish to create buttonholes on the front of our coat. Sew buttons evenly spaced down along one edge of the front opening, then create matching buttonholes on the opposite side for a secure closure.
Alternatively, you can opt for a more boho look and use a large safety pin or decorative brooch as a clasp.
Conclusion:
Converting an unused or old blanket into a warm and stylish coat is not only an environmentally-friendly option, but also allows you to create a unique piece that represents your personal style. With just a bit of measuring, cutting, and sewing, you’ll have your blanket transformed into an original piece you’ll be proud to wear all season long.
