How to Treat a Turf Burn: 11 Steps

Turf burns, also known as abrasions or “road rash,” are common injuries for athletes and outdoor enthusiasts who play on artificial turf surfaces. These painful wounds can result from sliding, falling, or skidding on the abrasive material. To speed healing and prevent infection, follow these 11 steps:

1. Stop Activity Immediately: The first step in treating a turf burn is to stop any activity that may worsen the wound. If you’re playing a sport or exercising, take a break to assess and address the injury.

2. Clean the Wound: Gently clean the wound using water and mild soap to remove dirt, grass, and debris. Don’t scrub too hard, as this can cause further irritation.

3. Apply an Antiseptic: To prevent infection, dab an antiseptic solution like hydrogen peroxide, rubbing alcohol, or an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment onto the wound.

4. Assess the Severity: If your turf burn is deeper than a regular scrape (e.g., exposing fatty tissue or requiring stitches), seek medical attention immediately.

5. Apply Cool Water: To soothe inflammation and relieve pain, gently press a clean cloth soaked in cold water against the wound for 10-15 minutes.

6. Cover with a Non-Stick Dressing: After cleaning and cooling the wound, protect it using a sterile non-stick dressing or bandage.

7. Change Dressings Regularly: Keep your non-stick dressing in place until the wound starts to heal; replace it daily or whenever it becomes damp with drainage from the wound.

8. Avoid Picking at Scabs: As your turf burn heals, it may form scabs. Resist the urge to pick at them; doing so exposes new skin layers and allows harmful bacteria to enter your body.

9. Keep Your Turf Burn Hydrated: Use a skin-friendly moisturizer or ointment to prevent the wound from drying out and cracking while it heals.

10. Apply an Over-the-Counter Topical Pain Reliever: Use over-the-counter pain relief creams, like ibuprofen or acetaminophen, to help manage discomfort and reduce inflammation.

11. Monitor the Healing Process: Keep an eye on your wound for signs of infection. If your turf burn becomes more painful, swells, or shows any discharge, consult a healthcare professional immediately.

By following these steps, you can properly treat a turf burn and minimize your risk of complications. And as always, consult your doctor if you have concerns about the healing process or your overall health.
