Sewing mitered corners can lend a professional touch to your sewing projects, making them look more polished and elegant. Whether you’re working on a quilt, tablecloth, or any other fabric that requires a neat corner finish, follow these 13 steps to create the perfect mitered corner every time.

1. Preparing the fabric: Begin by washing, drying, and ironing your fabric to ensure it is clean and wrinkle-free.

2. Cutting the fabric: Measure and cut your fabric to the desired size, ensuring you have added seam allowances as needed.

3. Hemming the edges: Fold and press each side of the fabric, creating a double-fold hem. The width of the hem should be equal on all sides.

4. Marking the corners: With a fabric marker or tailor’s chalk, mark the point where each hem meets at every corner.

5. Fold and pin: Fold each corner so that right sides are together and hems are aligned at the marked points. Pin along both edges.

6. Measure and mark stitching line: From the point where both hems meet, measure outwards at a 45-degree angle, half the width of your hem (e.g., for a 1-inch hem, measure 0.5 inches). Mark this point on both sides.

7. Draw stitching line: Using a fabric marker or tailor’s chalk, draw a straight line connecting the marked points on both sides.

8. Sew along stitching line: With your sewing machine (or by hand), sew along the marked line from one point to another.

9. Trim excess fabric: Trim away any excess fabric approximately 1/4 inch from the sewn line, ensuring you don’t cut through your stitches.

10. Press open seam allowance: Carefully open out the corner and press open seam allowance with an iron.

11. Folding the corner: Turn the corner right-side-out and gently push out the point using a point turner, knitting needle, or blunt pencil.

12. Press the mitered corner: With an iron, press smooth and shape your mitered corner for a sharp and crisp finish.

13. Secure the hem: Sew along the inside edges of your double-fold hem, ensuring your stitches are neat and tidy.

By following these 13 steps, you’ll have successfully sewn a professional-looking mitered corner that adds a touch of elegance to any sewing project. Practice makes perfect – keep refining your technique, experiment with different fabrics, and watch your mitered corners improve over time. Happy sewing!
