How to Play Presidents and Assholes

Presidents and Assholes is a classic social card game that emphasizes player interaction and hierarchy. The game can accommodate large gatherings, making it perfect for parties or casual get-togethers. In this article, we will explore the rules, strategies, and variations of the game.
Objective:
The goal of the game is to be the first player to get rid of all their cards. Throughout the game, players climb the social ladder to become President or slide down into the role of Asshole, depending on their performance.
Setup:
1. Gather a standard deck of 52 playing cards (no jokers).
2. Ensure there are at least four players (the more, the better).
3. Determine seating order randomly.
4. The initial player roles include President, Vice-President, Neutral Player(s), and Asshole. These roles will evolve during gameplay.
Card Rankings:
In Presidents and Assholes, card rankings ascend from 3 to 2 (lowest to highest). Suits have no value in this game; only ranks matter.
Gameplay:
1. The Asshole shuffles and distributes the entire deck evenly among all players.
2. Players arrange their cards in descending order (2 being the highest).
3. The first round begins with the player with the 3 of clubs leading by playing it face-up on the table.
4. Play moves clockwise; each player must play a card higher than or equal to the previous play.
5. If a player cannot beat the current card or chooses not to play a card, they pass.
6. Once all players have passed on a card, that set is considered ‘dead,’ and the last person to lay down a card initiates a new play.
7. A turn consists of playing single cards, pairs, triples (three-of-a-kind), or poker hands (runs/four-of-a-kind). Each play must include the same number of cards as the previous play and have a higher rank, or play must pass.
Winning the Game:
– The first player to get rid of all their cards becomes President.
– Other players continue playing until only one player remains with cards in their hands (the Asshole).
– The remaining players are ranked based on the order they finished: Vice-President, Neutral Players (if any), and finally, the Asshole.
Role Change:
Now that each player has a role, they must switch seats according to their ranking. This is where the game really turns social as friendly banter is encouraged to establish bragging rights or poke fun at those who end up as Assholes.
Variations and House Rules:
1. Some games may include unique card powers.
2. Trading cards are an option where the President exchanges two lowest-ranked cards with the Asshole’s two highest-ranked cards. The Vice-President and Vice-Asshole can also swap one card each.
3. Additional roles such as Beer Bitch or Secretary of State can add even more flavor to the game.
Presidents and Assholes is an engaging card game perfect for lighthearted gatherings. By mastering its rules and embracing the social aspect, you’ll undoubtedly add memorable moments to your game nights.
