Introduction:

Tutti frutti, a popular confectionery, is adored for its unique appearance and delightful taste. It consists of colorful, candied fruits used in various desserts, particularly baked goods like cakes, cookies, and muffins. Making homemade tutti frutti is easy and adds a personal touch to your culinary creations. Here’s how you can prepare this colorful treat in the comfort of your own kitchen.

Ingredients:

– 2 cups mixed fruits (papaya, watermelon, orange peel, etc.)

– 1 cup sugar

– ½ cup water

– Food coloring (red, green, yellow)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the fruits: Cut the chosen fruit into tiny cubes of about 5mm in size. Ensure all the seeds and fibrous parts are removed. You can use a single type of fruit or a combination for extra flavor.

2. Color the fruits: Divide the cut fruits into equal portions based on the number of colors you want to use. Place each portion in a separate bowl and add a few drops of food coloring to each bowl (one color per bowl). Mix well until the color is evenly distributed.

3. Boil the sugar syrup: In a saucepan, combine sugar and water over medium heat. Stir continuously until the sugar dissolves completely and becomes a clear syrup.

4. Soak the fruits in sugar syrup: Add colored fruit pieces to the saucepan containing sugar syrup one batch at a time — ensure that all pieces are submerged, stirring occasionally to prevent them from sticking together. After boiling each batch of fruit for 10 minutes, remove it from heat and place on a strainer to drain excess syrup.

5. Dry the tutti frutti: Lay down parchment paper or aluminum foil on a flat surface or tray. Spread the colored fruits onto the paper or foil and let them dry for 24 to 48 hours in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Stir occasionally during the drying process to ensure that it dries evenly.

6. Store your tutti frutti: After the drying period, your tutti frutti is ready to use and store. Keep it in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two months.

Conclusion:

Homemade tutti frutti not only satisfies your taste buds, but also adds a splash of color to your culinary confections. Now that you know how to make it yourself, enhance your desserts with this delightful ingredient and enjoy its appetizing charm.
