How to Make a Teepee: 15 Steps
1. Choose the location: Find a flat, open space in your backyard or a nearby park to set up your teepee.
2. Gather materials: You will need long poles (preferably wooden), rope or twine, a canvas or tarp, and stakes to secure the structure.
3. Plan the size: Determine how large you want your teepee to be. A typical size is around 12 feet in diameter and 15 feet tall.
4. Select the poles: Find six to twelve long, sturdy poles that are at least 3 feet longer than the desired height of your teepee.
5. Prepare the poles: Remove any branches or knots from the poles, and sand them down to create a smooth surface.
6. Create the tripod: Take three of the longest poles and lay them on the ground next to each other. Tie them together at one end using rope or twine, leaving a few inches of excess for adjustments.
7. Raise the tripod: Stand up the tied poles and spread them out into a tripod shape.
8. Add remaining poles: Place remaining poles in between the tripod poles, spacing them evenly around the circle. Tie each pole to the tripod’s center knot with rope or twine.
9. Adjust and secure: Once all poles are in place, adjust their positioning so that they lean evenly and form a tight circle at their base. Use stakes to secure each pole into the ground.
10. Cut canvas/tarp material: Measure and cut a piece of canvas or tarp that is long enough to cover your teepee frame from top to bottom, plus an extra foot for hemming and securing.
11. Create entry flaps: Cut two slits about 4-feet long and 2-feet apart on one side of your canvas or tarp material for your entry flaps.
12. Attach canvas/tarp: Start at the entry flaps and carefully wrap the canvas around the frame, ensuring it is tight and secure. Attach the canvas to each of the poles using twine or rope.
13. Hem the bottom: Fold up the excess material at the base of your teepee and use stakes to secure it in place.
14. Create a smoke hole: Cut out a small, triangular opening near the top of your teepee. This hole will allow for proper ventilation when using a fire inside.
15. Decorate your teepee: Add personal touches such as painting designs, attaching beads, feathers or dreamcatchers to make your teepee unique and inviting.
Now your teepee is complete! Enjoy hours of fun, relaxation, and outdoor gatherings with family and friends in your new, homemade teepee.
