How to Make a Star Piñata: 14 Steps

Every party becomes more memorable with the addition of a piñata. Shaped like a star, this DIY project will make your festivities sparkle even brighter. Here’s how to make a star piñata in 14 steps.
1. Gather materials: You will need cardboard, scissors, a pencil, ruler, masking tape, crepe paper or tissue paper, glue, string, and of course, candies or small toys for filling.
2. Create a template: Draw a star shape on a piece of cardboard. You can either freehand it or search for a star template online which can be printed and traced onto the cardboard.
3. Cut out the star: Using scissors, carefully cut out the star shape from the cardboard.
4. Make two: Create another identical star by tracing the first one onto another piece of cardboard and cutting it out.
5. Cut strips: From the leftover cardboard, cut out long strips approximately 2 inches wide.
6. Tape together: Line up these strips along the edges of one of the stars and tape them down using masking tape. They should match up with the angles and points of the star to create an even three-dimensional form.
7. Connect both stars: Place the second star on top of the connected strips, lining up the edges with the strips already taped down. Secure it with masking tape.
8. Create an opening: Now is the time to cut a small trapdoor for your candy or toy filling somewhere around the edge of your star where it won’t be too noticeable.
9. Add string: Punch two small holes near the top point of your piñata—this is where you’ll attach your string later on.
10. Let’s decorate! Cut 1-inch wide strips from crepe paper or tissue paper in colors that match your desired color scheme.
11. Make fringes: Add a fringe effect by cutting small slits into the strips, being careful not to cut all the way through.
12. Start gluing: Working one strip at a time, apply a line of glue to the back of the fringed tissue paper just above where you made your cuts. Press gently onto the piñata, beginning at the bottom edge and working your way up.
13. Keep it neat: Layer each strip slightly overlapping the previous one as you cover the piñata. Be sure to trim any excess paper so that it follows the star’s shape accurately.
14. Time for candy: Fill your piñata with candy or small toys through the trapdoor you made earlier and use string to hang it up securely. Now your star piñata is ready to be showcased and eventually broken by eager party guests!
And there you have it – a stellar addition to your celebration! Ready, set, break that piñata and enjoy the delightful cascade of surprises inside.
