Bread is a staple food in many cultures and is enjoyed in various forms across the globe. This simple yet nourishing food can be enjoyed on its own, with butter, or as part of a delicious sandwich. If you’ve never made bread before, this article will guide you through the process of making a loaf of white bread from scratch.

Ingredients:

– 4 cups all-purpose flour

– 2 teaspoons salt

– 2 teaspoons sugar

– 1/4 ounce (7g) active dry yeast

– 1 and 1/2 cups warm water (around 110°F / 45°C)

– 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or melted unsalted butter

Instructions:

1. Prepare your ingredients: Measure out all the ingredients listed above and have them ready for use.

2. Combine dry ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and sugar. Mix well with a whisk or fork to ensure even distribution.

3. Activate the yeast: In a separate bowl or measuring cup, dissolve the active dry yeast in warm water. Let it sit for about 5 minutes, or until it starts to foam.

4. Mix the dough: Add the activated yeast mixture to the dry ingredients along with the vegetable oil or melted butter. Using a wooden spoon or your hands, mix until everything is well combined and forms a soft dough.

5. Knead the dough: On a lightly floured surface, place your dough and knead it for about 8-10 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic. Add more flour if needed to prevent sticking.

6. First rise: Lightly oil a clean mixing bowl and place your kneaded dough inside. Cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.

7. Shape the loaf: Punch down the dough and transfer it to a lightly floured surface. Gently shape it into a loaf by folding the edges towards the center and then rolling it into a log. Seam-side down, place the shaped dough into a greased 9×5 inch (23×13 cm) loaf pan.

8. Second rise: Cover the loaf pan with a damp cloth or plastic wrap and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes, or until it has doubled in size again.

9. Preheat oven: Meanwhile, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

10. Bake: Remove the cloth or plastic wrap from your loaf pan and bake in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.

11. Cool and serve: Remove your fresh loaf of white bread from the oven and carefully turn it out onto a wire rack to cool for at least 15 minutes before slicing. Enjoy your homemade bread with butter, jam, or as part of a sandwich!

Now that you know how to make a classic white bread loaf, you can experiment with different flour types or mix-ins to create your own unique bread creations. Enjoy baking!
