How to Make 3D Printables in Blender

As the technology of 3D printing continues to evolve, more and more people are becoming interested in creating their own designs. Blender, a free and open-source 3D creation software, allows users to create 3D models that can be turned into printable objects.

Here are the steps to take in order to create your own 3D printables in Blender:

Step 1: Choose a Design

Before beginning your 3D printable design in Blender, you first need to choose what it is that you want to create. There are a multitude of free online resources for 3D print designs, such as Thingiverse or MyMiniFactory, which can help inspire you in creating an original design. Alternatively, you may simply wish to create a design of your own. Whatever the case, it is important to have a clear idea of the design you wish to bring to life.

Step 2: Open Blender

Once you have a design in mind, open Blender. Consider what size you want your 3D object to be and adjust the dimensions accordingly. Be sure to set your units to millimeters for accurate measurements, as that is the typical unit of measurement in the 3D printing world.

Step 3: Create the Object

Using Blender’s extensive set of modeling tools, create your object. It is best to use as little geometry as possible in order to make sure your object prints well. You can also use the Remesh modifier to simplify the geometry and make it more printable.

Step 4: Check for Errors and Export

Once your design is complete, run it through a free 3D printable checker, such as Netfabb or Meshmixer, to check for any errors in the design that may cause printing problems. Once any errors have been fixed, export the design file in an STL format, the most commonly used format for 3D printing.

Step 5: Prepare for Printing

Before printing, adjust any settings in your slicing software, such as the layer height, infill percentage, or support placement, to optimize your object for printing. Once the settings are dialed in, save the sliced file and transfer it to your 3D printer for printing.

Blender is a powerful and free tool for creating 3D printable objects. With the proper approach, anyone can bring their designs to life in the form of a 3D printed object. Keep your designs simple with minimal geometry, check the model for errors, and optimize your settings in the slicing software to achieve the best possible outcome.
