How to Kill Nematodes: 9 Steps

Nematodes, also known as roundworms, are microscopic parasites that can cause significant damage to plants, animals, and humans. They can invade plant roots and feed on their cells, eventually causing plants to wilt and die. If you’re dealing with a nematode infestation in your garden or around your home, follow these nine steps to kill them effectively.

1. Identify the problem: Confirm that your plants are indeed suffering from a nematode infestation. Signs of infestation include stunted growth, yellowing leaves, and root galls. You may need to consult an expert for proper diagnosis.

2. Practice crop rotation: Rotate crops so that the nematodes don’t have a continuous food supply. Ensure you plant different types of crops every year in the same area. Avoid planting susceptible plants like tomatoes or potatoes consecutively in the same location.

3. Solarize the soil: Soil solarization is a non-chemical technique to control nematodes. Cover the infested area with a clear plastic tarp during the hottest months of the year to trap heat and kill nematodes in the top few inches of soil.

4. Use organic amendments: Add compost or organic manure to your soil. The organic materials provide nutrients to beneficial microbes that help suppress nematodes by competing for resources and enhancing overall soil health.

5. Apply beneficial Nematophagous fungi: Some fungi, such as Paecilomyces lilacinus, have shown promising results in killing nematodes. These fungi can be applied as a biological control agent through commercially available products.

6. Introduce predatory and parasitic organisms: Other worms such as Steinernema feltiae or Heterorhabditis bacteriophora are known as beneficial nematodes that prey on plant-parasitic nematodes.

7. Use natural plant extracts: Some compounds derived from plants like neem, marigold, and castor bean have nematicidal properties. Apply these compounds as drenches or sprays to the soil and on plants to deter nematode infestations.

8. Employ chemical control methods: As a last resort, you can use chemical nematicides to kill nematodes. These chemicals are usually applied to soils before planting and can be toxic, so use them responsibly according to the product label instructions.

9. Maintain proper garden practices: Keep your garden and surrounding areas free of weeds and debris, which can serve as host plants for nematodes. Enhancing soil fertility through regular addition of organic matter is also essential for promoting a healthy ecosystem that keeps these pests in check.

By following these nine steps, you can effectively control nematode populations in your garden and protect your plants from future infestations. Remember that prevention is always better than treatment; maintain good gardening practices to minimize the risk of nematode issues in the first place.

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
