As a Mac user, you may have found that PuTTY, a popular SSH and telnet client, is not readily available. However, there are several ways to install and use PuTTY on a Mac. In this article, we will walk you through the steps to install and use PuTTY on your Mac.

First things first, you need to know that the official version of PuTTY is only developed for Windows platform. Therefore, to use PuTTY on Mac, you’ll need other tools, such as Wine or PuTTy for Mac alternatives.

Method 1: Installing PuTTY using Wine

Wine is an open-source software that allows Windows applications to run on other operating systems, including Mac. Follow the below steps to install PuTTY using Wine.

Step 1: Download WineBottler

To use PuTTY, you must first download WineBottler. WineBottler is a package that includes Wine and a graphical interface for easier access.

Step 2: Download PuTTY

Download the PuTTY executable file. You can download it from the official website, or you can download it from other reliable sources.

Step 3: Install PuTTY using WineBottler

Run WineBottler and click on “Advanced”. Then, click on “Select File” and choose the PuTTY executable file you’ve

downloaded. Finally, click on “Install” and follow the on-screen instructions to install PuTTY on your Mac.

Method 2: Using PuTTY Alternatives for Mac

There are several alternatives to PuTTY for Mac that you can use instead, including:

1. iTerm2

iTerm2 is a terminal emulator that provides many advanced features like split panes, multiple tabs, and session management. It is free and open-source software.

2. Termius

Termius is a cross-platform SSH client that allows you to manage SSH sessions across all your devices. It supports various protocols like SSH, Telnet, Mosh, and SFTP. You can use it to access remote servers, network devices, and cloud-based services.

3. ZOC Terminal

ZOC Terminal is a professional terminal emulator for Mac OS X. It supports SSH, Telnet, Modem, Serial, and several other communication protocols. It comes with many advanced features like scripting, automation, and logging.

Using PuTTY

Once you’ve successfully installed PuTTY on your Mac, you can use it to connect to remote servers using SSH or Telnet. Here’s how you can do it:

Step 1: Launch PuTTY

Double-click on the PuTTY icon from your applications folder to launch the application.

Step 2: Enter the server details

In the “Session” tab, enter the hostname or IP address of the server you want to connect to. Select the protocol you want to use, either SSH or Telnet. Then, click on “Open”.

Step 3: Enter the login details

Enter your login credentials for the remote server when prompted. Once you’ve entered your login details, you should be able to access the server via PuTTY.
