How to Fix the AMD Driver Timeout (TDR) Error on Windows

As a PC gamer, there is nothing more frustrating than experiencing a driver timeout error while playing your favorite game. These errors are frequent among AMD graphics card users and are commonly known as TDR (Timeout Detection and Recovery) errors. The good news is that these errors are fixable so that you can get back to gaming without any interruption.

There are several ways to fix the AMD driver timeout error, and we will be exploring the most effective ones in this article.

Method 1: Update Your Graphics Drivers

One of the most common reasons why AMD driver timeout errors occur is outdated graphics drivers. You can solve this by updating your drivers to the latest versions. To do this, follow these steps:

Step 1: Press Windows + R keys simultaneously to open the Run command box.

Step 2: Type “devmgmt.msc” in the box and click OK to open the Device Manager.

Step 3: Expand the Display Adapters option.

Step 4: Right-click on your AMD graphics card and select Update Driver.

Step 5: Choose the option “Search automatically for updated driver software”.

Method 2: Increase the TDR Timeout

The TDR (Timeout Detection and Recovery) is a feature in Windows that detects and corrects graphics cards that become unresponsive. You can increase the TDR timeout value to fix this issue.

Step 1: Press Windows + R keys simultaneously to open the Run command box.

Step 2: Type “regedit” in the box and click OK to open the Registry Editor.

Step 3: Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ GraphicsDrivers

Step 4: Right-click on GraphicsDrivers and select New->DWORD 32-bit.

Step 5: Name the DWORD “TdrDelay” and press Enter.

Step 6: Double click on the TdrDelay DWORD, and set the value data to “8”.

Step 7: Click OK and close the Registry Editor.

Method 3: Check for Overheating

AMD graphics cards are known for being power-hungry, and this results in overheating. Overheating can cause your graphics card to become unresponsive and lead to TDR errors. You can check for overheating by using third-party software such as HWMonitor, CoreTemp, or MSI Afterburner. These applications will display the temperature of your graphics card. If you notice that the temperature is too high, try cleaning your graphics card or investing in better cooling.

Method 4: Clean Install Graphics Drivers

If you have tried all the above methods and the problem persists, you can try to clean install AMD graphics card drivers. This will remove all the previous drivers and install a fresh copy, which should fix any issues.

Step 1: Download AMD Clean Uninstall Utility from their official website.

Step 2: Run the uninstall utility and select AMD graphics drivers.

Step 3: Follow the prompts to uninstall the drivers.

Step 4: Restart your PC.

Step 5: Download the latest version of AMD graphics drivers.

Step 6: Install the drivers and restart your PC.
