How to Eat Crabs: 10 Steps

1. Choose the right crab: When selecting a crab to eat, look for one that is heavy and full. You can tell if a crab is fresh by its firmness and bright coloring.
2. Prepare your workspace: Set up a clean space with newspapers or a plastic tablecloth to catch shells and juices. Have some tools on hand like crab crackers, picks or small forks, and a bowl for discarded shells.
3. Boil the crab: Place the live crabs in a large pot of boiling water with salt and any seasonings you desire. Boil the crabs for about 15-20 minutes or until they turn bright orange.
4. Cool the crab: After boiling, transfer the crabs to an ice bath or cool water to stop the cooking process. Let them cool for 5-10 minutes before handling.
5. Remove the apron: Turn the crab upside down, and you will see a small flap or apron at the back of its shell. Use your fingers or a knife to pry it up and remove it.
6. Clean the crab: Pull off the top shell of the crab by gripping it at its sides and lifting upwards. Remove any gills and innards with your hands or a small spoon.
7. Break the crab in half: Hold onto both sides of the cleaned crab, applying pressure downwards until it breaks into two equal halves.
8. Remove meat from legs and claws: Use a crab cracker or nutcracker to crack open each leg and claw at their joint segments. You can also use your hands if you don’t have a tool available. Then, use a pick or small fork to extract the meat from within.
9. Extract body meat: There may be more meat hidden within chambers of the body section of the crab. Use your pick or small fork to dig into these spaces and extract any remaining meat.
10. Enjoy: Once you have collected all the delicious crab meat, either eat it plain or season it to your liking. Dip it in melted butter, sprinkle it with Old Bay seasoning, or enjoy it in a crab salad. The choice is yours!
