How to Dry Out a Flash Drive Dropped in Water

If you’ve dropped your flash drive in water, don’t panic just yet. While it’s certainly not ideal, there are some methods that you can try to dry it out and potentially save your data. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to dry out a flash drive dropped in water.

Step 1: Remove the flash drive from the water

As soon as you realize the flash drive has been dropped in water, act quickly and remove it from the water source. If it fell in a pool, sink or bathtub, make sure to grab it out as soon as possible to prevent any further damage.

Step 2: Dry off the exterior

Using a soft, dry cloth, gently wipe the exterior of the flash drive to remove any excess water. Avoid putting too much pressure on any parts of the flash drive, as it may harm its internal components.

Step 3: Disassemble the flash drive

If possible, disassemble the flash drive to help it dry out faster. Unscrew the casing and remove the circuit board from inside the drive.

Step 4: Place the flash drive in a container of dry rice

Fill a container with uncooked rice and bury the flash drive inside it. The rice will help to absorb any remaining moisture left in the flash drive. Make sure the flash drive is completely covered by the rice and leave it in the container for at least 24 hours.

Step 5: Use a hair dryer

You can also use a hair dryer on the cool setting to blow air into the open ports of the flash drive. Avoid using the hot setting, as it could cause further damage.

Step 6: Try plugging in the flash drive

After 24 hours, remove the flash drive from the rice and reassemble it. Then, plug it into your computer to see if it still works. If it’s functioning properly, make sure to immediately back up the data you saved on it.

If these steps don’t work, it might be time to replace the flash drive. While it’s never ideal to lose data, taking these steps can help to increase the chances of salvaging any important information. Remember to take preventive measures in the future, such as keeping flash drives away from water sources, to avoid any further mishaps.
