How to Clean Teeth With Braces: 12 Steps

Introduction:

Maintaining proper oral hygiene is crucial for anyone, but it becomes even more important when you have braces. Braces can trap food particles and plaque, increasing the chances of tooth decay and gum problems. To help you maintain a healthy, beautiful smile with braces, we have compiled a 12-step guide that covers the most effective ways of cleaning your teeth.

1. Rinse Before Brushing:

Before you start brushing, rinse your mouth with water to remove any loose food particles that may be lodged in your braces. This will make it easier to clean your teeth thoroughly.

2. Use The Right Toothbrush:

Choose an orthodontic toothbrush designed specifically for cleaning teeth with braces. These brushes have softer bristles and a modified head shape to reach tricky areas around bracket and archwires.

3. Apply Fluoride Toothpaste:

Use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste on your orthodontic toothbrush to protect against cavities and promote healthy enamel while wearing braces.

4. Brush Each Individual Tooth:

Focus on cleaning each individual tooth by angling the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle and brushing gently in circular motions around brackets, gums, and teeth.

5. Clean Above And Below Brackets:

Ensure you clean both above and below the brackets by adjusting your brush angle accordingly.

6. Use An Interdental Brush:

An interdental brush can help you clean between wires and brackets, as well as tight spaces between your teeth where a regular toothbrush may not reach.

7. Floss Regularly:

Flossing can be tricky with braces, but using a floss threader or orthodontic-specific floss will make it easier to clean between teeth and remove plaque beneath wires.

8. Consider A Water Flosser:

Water flossers are an effective alternative to traditional flossing for braces wearers. They use a pressurized water stream to dislodge food particles and plaque from hard-to-reach areas.

9. Rinse With An Antiseptic Mouthwash:

After brushing and flossing, rinse with an antiseptic mouthwash to get rid of any remaining debris and kill bacteria.

10. Limit Sugary And Starchy Foods:

To minimize the risk of tooth decay and plaque accumulation, reduce your consumption of sugary and starchy foods, which can stick to teeth and foster bacterial growth.

11. Visit Your Orthodontist Regularly:

Keep up with your orthodontic check-ups to ensure that your braces are functioning correctly, and for any adjustments in cleaning techniques.

12. Visit Your Dentist For Regular Cleanings:

Schedule regular dental cleanings to remove any plaque or tartar build-up around your braces.

Conclusion:

Cleaning teeth with braces may require extra effort, but it is essential for maintaining good oral health during orthodontic treatment. Follow these 12 steps consistently to keep your teeth and gums healthy throughout the entire process.
