How to Avoid Hat Hair: 13 Steps

Hats are a versatile accessory for any outfit, but they can sometimes leave you with the dreaded hat hair. This unsightly phenomenon occurs when your hair becomes flat, messy, or takes on the shape of your hat. Fear not! Here are 13 steps to help you avoid hat hair and keep your locks looking fabulous.

1. Choose the right hat: Opt for hats made from breathable materials like cotton or wool that won’t cause too much friction against your hair.

2. Avoid tight hats: Tight hats tend to press your hair against your head and lead to a uniform flatness. Choose a looser-fitting hat that allows your hair to breathe.

3. Use volumizing spray: Before putting on your hat, apply a light volumizing spray to help maintain some lift in your roots even after wearing a hat.

4. Part your hair differently: If you usually part your hair down the middle, consider switching it up and parting it to the side before putting on the hat. This will create a more voluminous look when you remove the hat.

5. Style your hair with bends and waves: A wavy or curly hairstyle is less likely to be flattened by a hat. Use a curling iron or texturizing spray to create some movement in your strands.

6. Braid your hair: A simple braid or two will help keep your hair gathered and less susceptible to flattening by the hat.

7. Dry shampoo is essential: Applying dry shampoo before placing the hat will absorb excess oil and provide added volume, making it easier for you to refresh once it’s removed.

8. Tie your hair up: If you’re worried about flatness around the crown of your head, try tying some of it loosely at the top with an elastic band or clip before wearing the hat.

9. Slip on a silk scarf or lining under your hat: The smooth texture of silk can help reduce friction and avoid hat hair by offering a layer of protection.

10. Avoid overbrushing: Don’t try to brush out your hat hair; this could cause frizz and make matters worse. Simply tousle your locks with your fingers to bring them back to life.

11. Remove your hat for breaks: Give your hair a break whenever you can. Take off the hat at regular intervals, like when you’re indoors or when you won’t be seen by many people.

12. Fill in the gaps with styling products: After removing your hat, use a little hairspray or pomade to touch up your
