As technology has progressed, email has become a staple of daily life, with billions of emails being sent and received worldwide every day. However, with the increasing use of email, many terms have emerged that may be unfamiliar to some users. Therefore, it is essential to understand the glossary of email terms, which will help users navigate the ever-changing landscape of email.

Attachment

A file that is sent with an email message. Attachments can be images, documents, audio files, or any other type of computer file.

BCC

Blind Carbon Copy. An email feature that allows the sender to send a copy of an email to another person without revealing the recipient’s name or email address.

Bulk Email

An email message that is sent to a large number of email addresses at the same time. Bulk emails are often used for marketing purposes.

CC

Carbon Copy. An email feature that allows the sender to send a copy of an email message to one or more recipients.

Email Address

A unique identifier that represents an individual user or organization on the internet. Email addresses comprise two parts: the username and the domain name.

Filter

An email feature that sorts incoming emails and sends them to specific folders based on pre-defined criteria.

Forward

An email feature that allows the recipient to send an email to another person or group of people.

Inbox

The main folder where all incoming emails are stored.

Reply

An email feature that allows the recipient to respond to the sender’s message.

Signature

A block of text that is automatically added to the bottom of an email message. Signatures often include the sender’s name, job title, and contact information.

Spam

Unsolicited email messages sent to a large number of email addresses at the same time. Spam emails are often sent for marketing purposes or to spread malware.

Subject Line

The title or brief description of an email message.

Thread

A collection of individual email messages that are related to a particular subject. Emails in a thread are often displayed as a conversation.

Unsubscribe

A link or button included in marketing emails that allows the recipient to opt-out of receiving future emails from the sender.

Understanding the glossary of email terms is essential, especially for those using email extensively. By understanding these terms, users can make better use of email features and manage their email effectively. As email continues to evolve, staying up-to-date with new and emerging email terms is critical for users to keep up with new features and capabilities, making email communication more efficient and effective.

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
