Does the Nintendo Switch OLED Work With an Old Dock?

The Nintendo Switch OLED, the newest addition to the Nintendo Switch family, has been a topic of discussion since its announcement earlier this year. Many gamers are excited about the improved OLED screen, enhanced audio, and additional features. However, one question has been on the minds of Nintendo Switch owners who already have a dock and are considering upgrading to the OLED: Will the new OLED work with their old dock?

The answer is a bit complicated. The Nintendo Switch OLED is compatible with the old dock, but not every feature will work seamlessly. The new OLED has some differences in design and hardware that can affect compatibility when using the old dock.

The old dock is designed to work with the original Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch Lite. The Nintendo Switch OLED has a slightly larger screen than the original Switch models, meaning the dock could get in the way of the new OLED’s wider screen. The dock’s USB-C port is also in danger of scraping against the OLED’s longer and wider backplate, which could cause some cosmetic damage.

While these concerns may be worrisome, Nintendo has made it clear that the old dock will work with the new OLED. However, they do recommend purchasing a new dock to ensure optimal compatibility and the full use of new features.

One of the most significant features that may be compromised with the old dock is the OLED’s new Ethernet port. The original Switch model was restricted to Wi-Fi connectivity, but the OLED allows for a wired connection by using the Ethernet port. However, the old dock does not have this feature and thus cannot provide a wired connection.

Another feature that could be affected is the new adjustable stand. The old dock does not have a slot for the stand, but the OLED can still be used in tabletop mode with the old dock if set up manually.
