Introduction

Steak dinners are a favorite among many households, but picking the perfect cut of meat can be a daunting task, especially when trying to keep it on the budget-friendly side. Fortunately, there are several lesser-known cuts of steak that are just as delicious as their expensive counterparts without breaking the bank. Let’s explore some of these best cheap steak cuts that will certainly satisfy your taste buds.

1. Flat Iron Steak

The flat iron steak is a hidden gem found in the chuck section of the cow, just below the shoulder blade. This cut is very tender and flavorful with good marbling throughout. Perfect for grilling or pan-searing, it’s commonly used in fajitas and other Mexican dishes. Simply season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder before cooking to bring out its rich flavors.

2. Hanger Steak

Also known as “butcher’s steak,” hanger steak is a relatively inexpensive cut originating from the cow’s lower chest muscle. Known for its deep flavor and tenderness, it makes an excellent choice for grilling or pan frying. Its assertive flavor pairs well with bold marinades or rubs, including garlic, citrus, or spicy seasonings.

3. Chuck Eye Steak

Often referred to as “the poor man’s ribeye,” chuck eye steak comes from the rib area close to the chuck section of the cow. It shares many similarities in flavor and texture with ribeye steaks due to its marbling content but at a fraction of the price. Grill or pan-sear this cut with some olive oil, salt, and pepper to fully appreciate its beefy, juicy goodness.

4. Top Sirloin

Top sirloin comes from the rear of the cow near the hip section and is a leaner cut than other steaks mentioned here. However, it is still quite tender and flavorful if cooked properly. Try marinating it or using a dry rub to enhance its natural flavor. Best suited for grilling, broiling, or pan-searing, top sirloin should be sliced against the grain for maximum tenderness.

5. Flank Steak

This long, flat cut of meat comes from the lower abdominal area of the cow, and is an ideal option for those who prefer leaner steaks. Flank steak requires marinating to tenderize it, but can then be grilled or pan-seared to perfection. Slice it thin and across the grain to serve in dishes like fajitas, stir-fries, or salads.

Conclusion

Delicious steaks don’t always have to be expensive. These affordable cuts of steak—flat iron, hanger, chuck eye, top sirloin, and flank—provide excellent flavor and tenderness without costing too much. A little bit of research and creativity can help transform these budget-friendly options into delightful dinners that will impress both your wallet and taste buds!
