Baked Alaska is a classic dessert that combines the delicious taste of ice cream, cake, and toasted meringue to create a show-stopping finish to any meal. This fancy frozen treat has been popular since the 19th century and never goes out of style. If you’re looking to impress your guests at your next dinner party, this best baked Alaska recipe is perfect for you.

Ingredients:

1 chocolate sponge cake or pound cake

1 quart vanilla ice cream (or any flavor of your choice)

4 egg whites

1/8 teaspoon cream of tartar

3/4 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Instructions:

1. Prepare the base: Cut the chocolate sponge cake into a 1-inch thick layer that fits snugly on the bottom of a 9-inch pie dish or springform pan. Alternatively, use a ready-made pound cake.

2. Add ice cream: Soften the ice cream for about 10-15 minutes at room temperature. Once softened, spread it evenly over the cake layer in the dish, ensuring you cover all edges. Place this in the freezer for at least two hours so it’s completely set and firm.

3. Make meringue: With an electric mixer, beat egg whites on medium speed until they become frothy. Add cream of tartar and continue mixing until soft peaks form. Gradually add sugar and mix until stiff peaks form. Finally, add in vanilla extract and mix until well-blended.

4. Assemble: Remove the frozen base from the freezer and spread the meringue over it using a spatula, making sure to fully cover the ice cream layer. Create peaks with the spatula for added visual appeal.

5. Brown meringue: Preheat your oven’s broiler to high heat (500°F) and place the assembled baked Alaska on the middle rack of the oven. Allow the meringue to brown, which takes approximately 3-5 minutes – keep an eye on it to prevent burning.

6. Serve immediately: Once the meringue is browned, remove it from the oven and serve directly or transfer to a serving platter before cutting into slices.

Tips for Success:

1. You can use any flavor of ice cream you like – consider combining two complementary flavors for extra deliciousness.

2. If you don’t have a broiler or want a safer option, use a kitchen torch to brown the meringue instead.

3. For an added touch, drizzle it with chocolate sauce, caramel sauce or add your favorite fruit compote on top.

4. To save time, prepare the base and ice cream layer ahead of time, freeze them, and add the meringue when you’re ready to serve.

With this best baked Alaska recipe at your fingertips, you’ll be able to create a stunning and delicious dessert that’s sure to be a hit with your family and friends. Happy baking!
