How Artificial Intelligence is Revolutionizing Early Childhood Education

Most scholars will agree that the early childhood years set the stage for future academic success in middle school, high school, and secondary learning institutions. These formative years are essential for creating an environment where children learn the foundational skills necessary for academic success. With modern classrooms making a subtle shift to artificial intelligence and edtech, these years are seeing revolutionary change.

Do you have a hard time believing that even our elementary-aged kids can benefit from exposure to this technology? Review a few of these compelling arguments for how the introduction of AI into the elementary school classroom could improve the quality of education everywhere.

Students can receive more personalized tutoring.

When your child fails to understand the material covered in the lesson, it can sometimes be a challenge to make sure they catch up. Our classrooms are oversized and children are lost in the shuffle. Parents may have a difficult time teaching the new standards expected of young children, particularly because they are so distant from their own elementary school days.

Artificial intelligence can fill in the gap with crowd-sourced tutoring from professionals and more advanced classmates. Students can avoid the shame and embarrassment of asking for excess assistance in front of their peers without sacrificing their grades and achievements. Tutoring is more accessible and affordable than ever before using these digitized programs.

The computer sets the perfect pace.

For years, qualified educators have known that there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all approach to teaching a lesson. It’s nearly impossible to incorporate every possible learning style into each lesson while setting the perfect pace. Fast learners need to stay engaged while slow learners can’t be left behind. With the number of students increasing, the perfect pace is an elusive concept. Now, artificial intelligence can help to set the perfect pace for every student.

The individualized programs allow students to move on at their own rate. Particularly because the maturity levels and attention spans of elementary-aged students vary wildly, this gives children an ideal opportunity to explore academics at a comfortable speed. It is neither overwhelming nor frustrating for them to learn.

Edtech in elementary school may directly correlate with college success.

We’ve known for decades that early childhood education teaches our kids the skills they will need to build on for years to come. When they don’t fully comprehend the subjects now, those academic shortcomings will return to haunt them in their university years. Research shows that using robotics to teach early childhood education math classes offers a hands-on tool that helps children to grasp mathematical concepts. These years can pay huge dividends in the future when fewer university-bound students need to sign up for remedial college math courses.

At first glance, it may appear that introducing technology into elementary school classrooms has been done prematurely. However, this essential shift could bring about a revolutionary change that alters the academic future of the coming generation. Consider the many lifelong benefits children may have as a direct result of a more personalized and effective elementary school education.

Most scholars will agree that the early childhood years are crucial to intellectual growth and future success. But what do children need in these years? Tech enhanced tutoring? Or an environment – with or without tech – that meets their developmental needs. Play for example. Might be better to start with what “most scholars” agree that small children need. And “learning style”? What IS that?
