Apple TV is one of the most popular streaming devices in the market. It has evolved over the years, from its inception in 2007 to the latest Apple TV 4K. With each new device, Apple introduces new software versions with new features and improvements. Recently, Apple introduced a new update to its tvOS, version 15, which brings several new features and improvements. In this article, we will guide you through everything you need to know about the different versions of tvOS.

tvOS 1: The Beginning

The first-generation Apple TV was released in 2007 with the original firmware version 1.0. The software was based on a modified version of Mac OS X, and it had a simple, intuitive user interface. It allowed users to watch movies and TV shows from the iTunes store and stream content from their computers to their TVs.

tvOS 2: Improved Interface and Siri

tvOS 2 was launched alongside the new Apple TV in 2015 and brought several new features. It had a revamped user interface with more focus on content discovery. Along with that, tvOS 2 introduced Siri integration, allowing users to control their Apple TV with voice commands.

tvOS 3: Brighter, Faster, and More Personal

Released in 2016, tvOS 3 brought significant improvements to the interface. It included a new “dark mode” option, which was easier on the eyes while watching TV in low-light conditions. In addition, Apple TV now supported Live Photos, offering a more personal viewing experience. With tvOS 3, Apple also introduced Single Sign-On, which eliminated the need for users to enter their cable provider’s credentials multiple times.

tvOS 4: Multi-User Support and Better Gaming

Released in 2017, tvOS 4 added multi-user support, making it easy for families to switch between accounts and access their individual profiles. With this update, Apple TV also gained support for game controllers, making it a more immersive experience for gamers. In addition, tvOS 4 introduced the “TV” app, which aggregated all the user’s favorite movies and TV shows in one place.

tvOS 5: 4K and HDR

tvOS 5 was a significant update released alongside the Apple TV 4K in 2017. It introduced support for 4K and HDR content, making the viewing experience much more immersive. tvOS 5 brought several improvements to the user interface, including automatic dark mode switching based on environmental lighting, bed time mode, and more.

tvOS 6: Apple Arcade and Controller Support

tvOS 6 was released in 2019 and brought support for the new Apple Arcade gaming service. With tvOS 6, users can now enjoy thousands of games on their Apple TV without the need for any extra hardware. This update also brought support for Xbox One and PS4 controllers, allowing gamers to use their favorite controllers.

tvOS 7: Picture-in-Picture and More

tvOS 7 was released in 2020 and brought several new features, including Picture-in-Picture, which allowed users to watch one video while browsing other content. tvOS 7 also introduced support for HomeKit-enabled video cameras, allowing users to view their cameras on their TVs. Additionally, tvOS 7 brought support for multiple user profiles for gaming.

tvOS 15: Spatial Audio and More

tvOS 15 is the latest update to Apple’s tvOS, which was released in September 2021. It brings several improvements to the user experience. One of the biggest additions is the support for Spatial Audio, offering a more immersive audio experience for movies, TV shows, and games. tvOS 15 also adds new features to the Home app, allowing users to access their favorite HomeKit accessories from their TVs. Another notable addition is the SharePlay feature, which allows users to watch and listen to content together via FaceTime.

Conclusion

Apple TV has come a long way since its inception. With each new version of tvOS, Apple adds new features and improvements, making the viewing and gaming experience more immersive and enjoyable. Whether you are using an older generation Apple TV or the latest Apple TV 4K, tvOS offers a wide range of features that make it one of the best streaming devices in the market today.
