How to Deskunk Your Dog: 13 Steps

Skunks are notorious for their strong, pungent scent when they feel threatened. While it may seem like your dog has escaped such encounters unscathed, their curiosity can still lead them straight into a skunk’s line of fire. If you suddenly notice that your dog has been sprayed by a skunk, don’t panic! Here are 13 steps to help you deskunk your dog effectively:
1. Keep calm and assess the situation: Before diving into any de-skunking process, take a deep breath and evaluate the situation. Check if your dog has any visible injuries or seems affected by the spray.
2. Ready your supplies: Gather the necessary supplies, including rubber gloves, paper towels or old rags, a large bucket, and clean water. For an effective deskunking solution, mix 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup of baking soda, and 1-2 teaspoons of liquid dish soap.
3. Move promptly: The more quickly you can address the skunk’s odor on your dog’s coat, the better. Skunk oil can sink into a dog’s skin if left untreated, making it much harder to remove.
4. Keep the dog outside: To avoid spreading the smell through your house, keep your dog outdoors or in a well-ventilated area like a garage.
5. Protect yourself: Wear rubber gloves and old clothes that you won’t mind discarding afterward.
6. Identify the sprayed area: Locate where on your dog’s body they have been sprayed to target your cleaning efforts effectively.
7. Remove excess skunk oil: Using paper towels or old rags, gently blot and rub away as much of the oil from your dog’s coat as possible without spreading it further.
8. Mix the cleaning solution: In a large bucket, combine hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and dish soap. Mix well until you have a paste-like consistency.
9. Apply the solution: With your gloves on, carefully apply the deskunking solution to your dog’s affected areas, rubbing it deep into their fur. Avoid getting the mixture in your dog’s eyes, ears, or mouth.
10. Let it sit: Allow the solution to sit on your dog’s coat for about 20 minutes. The chemical reaction between the ingredients will help break down and neutralize the skunk oil.
11. Rinse thoroughly: After 20 minutes, rinse your dog thoroughly with clean water. Make sure all traces of the deskunking solution are washed away to prevent skin irritation.
12. Check if repeat is necessary: Give your dog a sniff test after rinsing and air-drying. If the smell persists, you may need to repeat steps 8-11 one or two more times.
13. Reward your dog: Finally, give your dog plenty of love and reassurance after enduring this ordeal. Offer treats as a reward for their patience throughout the deskunking process.
