Carrying an injured or unconscious person is a challenging and often necessary task during emergency situations. A two-person arm carry can offer the needed support and stability to transport an individual to safety. In this article, we discuss four different techniques for safely and effectively performing a two-person arm carry.

1. The Classic Two Person Arm Carry

The classic two-person arm carry, also known as the “fireman’s carry,” is a simple yet effective method for transporting an individual.

– Step 1: Have both rescuers stand on either side of the person needing assistance.

– Step 2: Each rescuer extends their inside arm under the individual’s legs while holding their other hand under the person’s armpit.

– Step 3: Rescuers lift simultaneously, ensuring that their backs are straight to prevent injury.

– Step 4: Walk in unison while carrying the person to ensure stability and balance.

2. The Chair Carry Technique

The chair carry technique resembles the classic method but creates a more comfortable seat-like position for the injured or unconscious person.

– Step 1: One rescuer kneels next to the individual’s head, while the other kneels next to their feet.

– Step 2: Each rescuer places one hand under the individual’s knee and the other hand under their shoulder (or ankle, depending on head or feet).

– Step 3: Rescuers lift simultaneously and coordinate their movements while walking.

3. The Swing Carry

The swing carry allows for better support of an individual’s head, neck, and spine, making this method ideal in cases when proper posture must be maintained.

– Step 1: Rescuers stand face-to-face at each side of the person needing aid.

– Step 2: Each rescuer crosses their arms, forming an “X” shape in front of them.

– Step 3: The individual is gently lowered onto the rescuers’ crossed arms.

– Step 4: One rescuer supports the head and upper body, while the other supports the lower body and legs.

– Step 5: Move in synchronization, ensuring proper support throughout transit.

4. The Two Person Cradle Carry

This method offers additional support for an unconscious or injured person, distributing their weight between both rescuers.

– Step 1: Rescuers stand on either side of the person needing assistance, facing each other.

– Step 2: Each rescuer extends one arm under the individual’s legs and the other arm under their back.

– Step 3: One rescuer lifts the individual’s legs while the other lifts their head and shoulders.

– Step 4: Rescuers should walk carefully in unison, ensuring that they maintain a stable and secure grip.

In conclusion, these four two-person arm carry techniques can be employed in various emergency situations to safely transport an injured or unconscious individual. Each method provides different levels of support, comfort, and stability. It is crucial to utilize appropriate communication and teamwork to ensure a smooth and secure carry.
