3 Ways to Store Celery

Celery is a versatile vegetable that can be enjoyed in a variety of ways, from crunchy crudité platters to flavorful soups and stews. Despite its usefulness in the kitchen, many people struggle with keeping celery fresh for extended periods. Below, we explore three ways to store celery that ensure it remains crisp and delicious for as long as possible.

1. Paper Towel & Plastic Bag Method

One of the simplest and most effective ways to store celery is by wrapping it in paper towels before placing it inside a plastic bag. The paper towel absorbs any excess moisture, preventing the celery from becoming damp and limp. To implement this method:

– Thoroughly wash the celery stalks and pat them dry with a clean towel.

– Wrap each stalk individually in a paper towel, ensuring the entire surface is covered.

– Place the wrapped stalks inside an unsealed plastic bag.

– Store the bag in your refrigerator’s crisper drawer for up to two weeks.

Remember to always keep plastic bags unsealed when storing vegetables, as this will enable air circulation and prevent excessive moisture buildup.

2. Aluminum Foil Method

Another effective method for storing celery is using aluminum foil. This technique helps maintain your celery’s freshness while allowing ethylene gas, which is produced naturally during ripening, to escape. Follow these steps:

– Rinse the celery stalks under cold water and gently pat them dry.

– Wrap individual celery stalks or small bundles tightly in aluminum foil. Be sure not to wrap too tightly; allow some room for air movement inside the foil.

– Place the wrapped bunches inside your refrigerator’s crisper drawer.

– Properly stored with this method, your celery can remain fresh for up to four weeks.

3. Water Immersion Method

The water immersion technique involves placing your celery stalks upright in a jar or container of water, much like storing cut flowers in a vase. This method can prolong celery’s freshness by providing continuous hydration. To use the water immersion method:

– Rinse and dry the celery stalks.

– Cut off the bottom of each stalk at a 45-degree angle, exposing more surface area for water absorption.

– Fill a jar or container with fresh water and position the celery stalks upright in it, ensuring that only the bottom ends are submerged.

– Store the jar in your refrigerator, preferably on a shelf rather than inside the crisper drawer.

– Replace the water every two to three days to maintain freshness.

Celery stored with this method can stay fresh from one week up to two weeks.

In conclusion, proper storage is key for preserving the crispness and longevity of your celery. By utilizing any one of these three methods – paper towel & plastic bag, aluminum foil, or water immersion – you’ll enjoy deliciously crunchy celery to enhance your dishes or healthy snacking for weeks to come.
