3 Ways to Make Origami
Introduction:
Origami, the ancient Japanese art of paper folding, has been enjoyed by people of all ages for centuries. By transforming a simple sheet of paper into intricate shapes and designs, you can create unique and beautiful objects that spark creativity and foster mindfulness. In this article, we will explore three different ways to make origami: a classic crane, a jumping frog, and a modular cube.
1. Classic Origami Crane:
The crane is perhaps the most iconic and well-known origami creation. Symbolizing peace and longevity in Japanese culture, it is believed that folding 1,000 cranes can grant one wish.
Materials needed:
– A square piece of origami paper (preferably 6×6 inches)
Instructions:
a) Start with the colored side up and fold the paper diagonally in half both ways, creating an “X” shape crease. Unfold.
b) Turn the paper over and fold it horizontally and vertically in half. Unfold.
c) Fold the corners inward along the existing creases such that you form a square base.
d) Fold the top layers of each corner up to meet at the top center point.
e) Fold the lower edges up to align with the center vertical crease.
f) Unfold these flaps while folding entire top-down along the horizontal edge you just created. This forms a “petal fold.”
g) Repeat this petal fold on the other side.
h) Fold upper layers inwards so that their edges align with the central vertical line.
i) Fold these flaps upwards to narrow down the overall figure.
j) Turn your work around, and repeat these folds for a symmetrical piece.
k) Grasp opposite interior wings while gently pulling outward, allowing your crane to take shape. Create pleats for head and tail if desired.
2. Jumping Origami Frog:
This fun and interactive origami project will allow you to create a paper frog that can be made to jump with a simple press of a finger.
Materials needed:
– A square piece of origami paper (preferably 4×4 inches)
Instructions:
a) Begin with the paper facing color side down. Fold in half diagonally both ways and unfold.
b) Fold in half vertically and horizontally, creating a smaller square.
c) Using existing creases, fold all four corners towards the center.
d) Fold the bottom edge up along the horizontal centerline of your model.
e) Fold each side of the bottom portion (now in a triangle shape) outwards, aligning edges with the center vertical crease.
f) Unfold these flaps to create two smaller triangles extending outwards, which will act as front legs.
g) Fold back legs frontward, aligning with the center vertical line.
h) Slide your finger under your frog model and press down to make it jump.
3. Modular Origami Cube:
A more complex project, this modular origami cube allows you to build real 3D forms by assembling multiple identical units. This is an excellent way to challenge your folding skills and create eye-catching geometric displays.
Materials needed:
– 6 sheets of square origami paper (preferably 3×3 inches for each piece)
– Glue (optional)
Instructions:
a) Follow steps a-c in the Classic Origami Crane section above, creating six individual sheet bases for each unit.
b) Bringing both bottom corners upward, align them with the top, forming an inverted triangle.
c) Tuck bottom flap into nearby pocket and repeat these steps for all six units.
d) Assemble each unit by sliding triangular flaps into neighboring pockets
