3 Ways to Cool Burns from Chili Peppers

Introduction:

Chili peppers are a popular ingredient in many cultures for their ability to add heat and flavor to dishes. However, they can also cause painful burns if you’re not careful when handling or consuming them. Here are three ways to cool burns from chili peppers and alleviate the discomfort.

1. Cold Dairy Products:

One of the most effective ways to soothe burns from chili peppers is using cold dairy products, such as milk, yogurt, or ice cream. Capsaicin, the active component responsible for the heat of chili peppers, is fat-soluble. Therefore, dairy products can help dissolve and neutralize the spiciness. To relieve the pain, simply immerse the affected area in a bowl of cold milk or yogurt for several minutes or eat a spoonful of ice cream if your mouth feels the burn.

2. Acidity-Based Solutions:

Capsaicin is also pH-sensitive, meaning that acidic substances can help neutralize its intensity. If you’ve touched chili peppers and ended up with a burning sensation on your skin, try using lemon juice or vinegar to alleviate it. Squeeze some lemon juice or pour a bit of white vinegar on a clean cloth and gently dab it onto the affected area. Rinse it off with cold water afterward. For those who have consumed spicy food and experienced the burn in their mouth or throat, sipping on an acidic beverage like orange juice can provide relief.

3. Starches:

Some starchy foods may help absorb capsaicin and reduce its fiery effects. Boiled rice, bread, potatoes, or even tortilla chips can come in handy when dealing with a chili pepper burn in your mouth or throat. Simply chew on these starches slowly to help absorb some of the capsaicin lingering in your mouth or on your tongue. Be sure to drink water regularly throughout this process to wash away any leftover chili particles.

Conclusion:

Chili pepper burns can be uncomfortable, but there are many ways to alleviate the pain and enjoy your food. Remember these three methods – using cold dairy products, turning to acidity-based solutions, and munching on starches – to cool down your chili pepper burns effectively. Additionally, it’s essential to be cautious when handling or consuming spicy foods to prevent burns in the first place. Always wash your hands thoroughly after touching chili peppers or wear gloves during meal preparation.
