3 Ways to Make a Recurve Bow

A recurve bow is an exquisite piece of equipment for both beginners and experienced archers. Derived from traditional longbows, the ends of a recurve bow curve away from the archer. This essential design feature provides more power and accuracy in each shot. If you’re keen on crafting your own recurve bow, here are three methods to guide you:
1. The PVC Pipe Method
Materials needed:
– PVC pipe (5 feet long and 1-inch diameter)
– Heat gun
– String (paracord or nylon rope)
– Sandpaper
– Bowstring serving kit
Steps:
a. Measure and mark the midpoint of the PVC pipe.
b. Use the heat gun to warm up the area around the midpoint, this will make the pipe more flexible.
c. Press down on the heated area to create a slight bend; this will serve as the handle for your recurve bow.
d. Heat both ends of the pipe (about 6 inches from each end) and shape them to create symmetrical curves.
e. Once cooled, place string grooves about 1-inch from both ends of the pipe.
f. Create a bowstring using paracord or nylon rope and serve it with a bowstring serving kit.
g. Sandpaper any rough edges and add personal touches to customize your recurve bow.
2. The Laminated Wood Method
Materials needed:
– Hardwood boards (maple or hickory)
– Wood glue
– Fiberglass sheets
– Clamps
– Bandsaw or jigsaw
– Rasp
– Sandpaper
Steps:
a. Choose a hardwood board as your base layer.
b. Cut two pieces of fiberglass sheet slightly longer than your wood board.
c. Apply wood glue on one side of the wood board and on one side of each fiberglass sheet.
d. Sandwich the wood board between the two fiberglass sheets with the glue sides touching; clamp them together tightly and let dry for 24 hours.
e. Trim any excess fiberglass and draw your desired bow shape on the laminated board.
f. Cut out the shape using a bandsaw or jigsaw, then rasp and sand to create smooth edges.
g. Carve grooves for the string, create a custom bowstring, and finish with any personalizations.
3. The Primitive Method
Materials needed:
– Green sapling or seasoned hardwood
– Sharp knife or hatchet
– Wood rasp
– Sandpaper
– String (twine or rawhide)
Steps:
a. Choose a strong, straight branch with minimal knots (6 feet long and 1-inch diameter).
b. Trim any side branches and remove bark using a sharp knife or hatchet.
c. Slightly narrow down each end of the branch to create tapered limbs.
d. Shape your bow by shaving off wood from the belly with a wood rasp until you reach your desired curve.
e. Sand down rough edges to create a smooth surface.
f. Carve notches for string attachment and use twine or rawhide as your bowstring.
Whichever method you choose, practice patience when crafting your recurve bow for the best results. Happy shooting!
