3 Ways to Make a Nunchaku
The nunchaku, also known as nunchuks or chain sticks, is a traditional Okinawan weapon consisting of two sticks connected at one end by a short chain or rope. Used in martial arts and self-defense, the nunchaku gained popularity in the West through its depiction in various movies and TV shows featuring martial arts legend Bruce Lee. If you’re interested in making your own nunchaku, here are three ways to create this iconic weapon.
1. Wooden Nunchaku
Materials:
– Two wooden dowels (12-14 inches long and 1 inch in diameter)
– Sandpaper
– Wood stain or paint (optional)
– Cord or chain
Instructions:
a) Begin by sanding the wooden dowels until they are smooth to prevent splinters. Remove any rough edges and imperfections from the dowels.
b) If desired, you can stain or paint the dowels to give them a unique appearance. Allow the stain or paint to dry completely before continuing.
c) Drill a hole through the top of each dowel, slightly larger than the thickness of your cord or chain.
d) Measure and cut a piece of cord or chain approximately 5-7 inches long.
e) Thread the cord or chain through the holes in each dowel, securing it with knots if using cord, or by attaching clasps if using a chain.
2. PVC Nunchaku
Materials:
– Two PVC pipes (12-14 inches long and 1 inch in diameter)
– PVC caps
– Sandpaper
– Cord or chai
Instructions:
a) Sand down any rough edges on the PVC pipes to prevent injuries during use.
b) Attach a PVC cap on one end of each pipe.
c) Drill a hole through both caps, making sure it’s wide enough for your cord or chain.
d) Measure and cut a piece of cord or chain approximately 5-7 inches long.
e) Thread the cord or chain through the holes in the caps, securing it with knots if using cord, or by attaching clasps if using a chain.
3. Foam Nunchaku
Materials:
– Two foam pool noodles (12-14 inches long and 1 inch in diameter)
– Duct tape
– Cord or chain
Instructions:
a) Cut two foam pool noodles to the desired length of your nunchaku. Remove any rough edges
b) Wrap duct tape around one end of each pool noodle, creating a secure space to attach the cord or chain.
c) Pierce a hole through the duct tape on each pool noodle, wide enough for your cord or chain.
d) Measure and cut a piece of cord or chain approximately 5-7 inches long
e) Thread the cord or chain through the holes in each pool noodle, securing it with knots if using cord, or by attaching clasps if using a chain.
