3 Ways to Accept a Diploma

Graduation is a significant milestone in every person’s life. As you prepare to walk across the stage and accept your hard-earned diploma, it’s essential to know the proper etiquette for receiving this symbol of your achievements. In this article, we will discuss three ways you can graciously accept your diploma during the ceremony.

1. The Traditional Handshake and Diploma Exchange

The most common way to accept a diploma involves shaking hands with the presenter while simultaneously receiving the diploma with your other hand. When approaching the presenter, extend your right hand for a firm handshake, making eye contact and smiling. With your left hand, take hold of the diploma, usually presented by another official standing beside the presenter. After this exchange, it’s appropriate to offer a brief verbal “thank you” before confidently proceeding off the stage.

2. The Respectful Bow or Curtsy

In some cultures and academic institutions, it is customary to perform a bow or curtsy as a sign of gratitude and respect before accepting the diploma. This gesture typically takes place when you first approach the presenter on stage and before any physical contact is made. Make eye contact with the presenter, then slightly bend at the waist for a slight bow (for men) or perform a small curtsy (for women). After completing this gesture, continue with the traditional handshake and diploma exchange mentioned above.

3. The Hug or Embrace (With Permission)

In certain situations, such as smaller-scale graduation ceremonies or when there is a close personal bond between you and the presenter, hugging or embracing them could be appropriate. Always ensure that this level of familiarity is welcome by observing cues from the presenter or asking beforehand if necessary. If an embrace feels fitting and welcomed by both parties involved, approach with open arms while still grasping your diploma with one hand. Share a brief but genuine hug before moving on to the next part of the ceremony.

Regardless of which method you choose to accept your diploma, remember that this is a moment to be celebrated and cherished. Practice good posture and walk across the stage with confidence, knowing that you have worked hard to reach this accomplishment. Ultimately, the most important aspect of accepting your diploma is displaying gratitude and pride in your achievements.
