Hanging baskets aren’t just for flowers; they’re a fantastic opportunity to grow edible plants. With space at a premium, especially in urban areas, hanging baskets offer a unique vertical gardening solution that can yield delicious and fresh produce. Here are the 25 best edible plants that you can grow in hanging baskets.

.Strawberries – A favorite for their sweet fruit and compact growing habits.

.Cherry Tomatoes – Perfect for baskets, these continue to produce fruit throughout the season.

.Herbs – Basil, parsley, thyme, and chives are all excellent choices for hanging baskets.

.Salad Greens – Lettuce, spinach, and arugula grow quickly and are easily harvested.

.Nasturtiums – Both the leaves and flowers are edible, adding a peppery taste to salads.

.Peppers – Dwarf varieties of bell or chili peppers thrive in the aerial confines of a basket.

.Dwarf Beans – Compact runner beans or French beans work well in baskets.

.Radishes – Quick to grow and easy to harvest from above.

.Edible Flowers – Such as violas and calendulas which add color and interest to your hanging garden.

.Peas – Sugar snap peas or snow peas can be trained to cascade down beautifully.

.Cucumbers – Smaller varieties can hang over the sides, making them easy to pick.

.Blueberries – Dwarf blueberry plants are ornamental and productive in containers.

.Alpine Strawberries – Smaller than regular strawberries with a deeper flavor profile.

.Thyme – Perfect for a drier location; this herb thrives with less water than most others.

.Rosemary – Its trailing varieties can drape beautifully over the sides of baskets.

.Mint – But be cautious as it can easily overrun the space unless regularly trimmed back.

.Swiss Chard – Colorful stems make this both decorative and nutritious green to grow overhead.

.Oregano – It’s hardy enough for the limited soil volume of a basket and grows back each year.

.Marjoram – Similar to oregano but with a milder flavor; ideal for hanging locations with lots of sunlight.

.Kale – A resilient leafy green that continues to produce even as you harvest leaves from the outer edges.

.Bok Choy – Asian green that grows quickly and works great in partial shade conditions of porches or balconies.

.Tarragon – French tarragon is particularly suited for hanging gardens due to its moderate-size growth pattern.

.Edible Pansies – Their colorful blooms are not just beautiful, they’re also tasty in salads or as garnishes!

.Lemongrass – Ideal if you love cooking Asian cuisine; keep it watered well during hot weather periods.

.Purple Malabar Spinach – This is both a beautiful vine with pink flowers and tasty leaves that resemble spinach.

Growing these edible plants in hanging baskets not only saves space but also adds aesthetic appeal to your home’s exterior spaces while providing fresh ingredients for your kitchen!
