What Is VK? Things You Should Know About Russia’s Facebook

When it comes to social media platforms, many of us think of Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram as the big players. However, there is a different, yet popular social media platform that many are not aware of – VK.

VK, also known as VKontakte or VK.com, is a social media platform that is similar to Facebook, and is especially popular in Russia and other Eastern European countries. It was launched in 2006 by Pavel Durov, who later went on to found Telegram.

Here are some things you should know about VK:

1. What is VK used for?

VK is primarily used for social networking, in a similar way that Facebook operates. Users can create a profile, share posts with their friends, upload and share photos and videos, join and create groups, and even play games on the platform.

2. How many users does VK have?

As of 2021, VK has over 500 million registered users. While Facebook has over 2 billion users, VK’s popularity in Russia and other Eastern European countries gives it a significant presence in the region.

3. Why is VK popular in Russia?

One of the reasons for VK’s popularity in Russia is that it was developed by Russians specifically for the Russian market. Additionally, VK has a more liberal approach to content moderation than Facebook, which has been known to censor content on its platform. This has led to VK being seen as a platform that offers more freedom of expression, which has helped to grow its user base.

4. What features does VK have that Facebook does not?

One feature that sets VK apart from Facebook is the ability to share music and other audio files. VK also offers live streaming capabilities, which Facebook has only recently started to offer. Additionally, VK has a built-in instant messenger that allows users to communicate with one another in real-time without having to leave the platform.

5. Is VK only available in Russian?

While VK was originally only available in Russian, it has since been translated into other languages, including English. However, the majority of content on the platform is still in Russian, which may make it less accessible for non-Russian speakers.
