What Is Pennsylvania (PA) Sales Tax on Cars?

When purchasing a vehicle in Pennsylvania, one of the expenses that buyers must consider is the sales tax on cars. The sales tax rate in Pennsylvania is currently set at 6%. However, there are additional rates depending on the county where the transaction takes place.

In Allegheny County, for example, there’s an additional 1% local sales tax, and in Philadelphia County, a 2% local sales tax applies. This brings the total sales tax rate to 7% in Allegheny County and 8% in Philadelphia County.

Calculating Sales Tax on Cars

To determine the amount of sales tax to pay for your vehicle purchase in Pennsylvania, follow these steps:

1. Determine the total purchase price of your vehicle.

2. Identify which county the vehicle purchase is being made in.

3. Apply the appropriate sales tax rate based on your county.

For example, if you buy a car for $20,000 in a county with only the standard 6% sales tax rate, you will pay an additional $1,200 in sales tax ($20,000 x 0.06).

Exemptions and Deductions

There are certain scenarios where an exemption or deduction may apply to your vehicle purchase:

1. Trade-in Allowance: If you’re trading in a vehicle as a part of your new car purchase, you can subtract the value of your trade-in from the taxable amount. For example, if you buy a car for $20,000 and trade-in your old car for $5,000, you would only pay sales tax on $15,000.

2. Sales Tax Paid Out-of-State: If you purchased and paid sales tax on a vehicle out-of-state before bringing it to Pennsylvania within six months of purchase, and provided that state’s sales tax rate was equal to or greater than Pennsylvania’s rate, you may be exempt from paying additional sales tax in Pennsylvania.

3. Family Exemptions: Certain family members may be exempt from sales tax if the vehicle is transferred to them as a gift or through inheritance. Family members that qualify for this exemption include spouses, parents, children, grandparents, grandchildren, and siblings.

4. Disabled Veterans: If you are a 100% disabled veteran with a service-connected disability that resulted in the loss of use of both arms or legs, you may be exempt from paying the sales tax on a new vehicle.

Overall, understanding Pennsylvania’s sales tax on cars is essential for budgeting your vehicle purchase. Ensure you factor in the correct rate based on your county and any possible exemptions or deductions to calculate your final cost accurately.
