What is Direct X 12 and Why is it Important?

DirectX 12 is the latest version of Microsoft’s DirectX technology, which is a collection of APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) for handling multimedia tasks, particularly gaming, on Windows-based platforms. DirectX was first introduced in 1995, and after 25 years it has evolved to become one of the most important cross-platform technologies used by game developers.

DirectX 12 brings several improvements over its predecessor, DirectX 11. The biggest change is its ability to enable more efficient use of hardware resources, particularly graphics processing units (GPUs). With DirectX 12, game developers can now take better advantage of the latest hardware features, resulting in smoother gameplay, shorter load times, and reduced power consumption.

One of the ways DirectX 12 achieves this is through its multi-threaded command buffer technology, which allows the CPU to send more commands to the GPU simultaneously. This reduces the overall workload of the CPU and distributes it more evenly across multiple cores, resulting in better performance.

Another important feature of DirectX 12 is its support for explicit multi-adapter. Traditionally, games have been limited to using a single GPU, but with explicit multi-adapter support, developers can use multiple GPUs in parallel, even if they are from different manufacturers. This can result in significantly higher frame rates and smoother gameplay, particularly for graphically intensive applications.

DirectX 12 also offers several new features and APIs that allow for greater customization and control over how games are rendered. For example, developers can now specify the maximum number of threads used for certain tasks, using the best-suited algorithms for specific workloads, resulting in increased processing efficiency.

So, why is DirectX 12 important? For one, it offers game developers an improved platform for creating and optimizing games. This means games that run on DirectX 12 will have better performance, making for a more immersive and enjoyable gaming experience. Additionally, DirectX 12’s improved efficiency means that gamers will be able to play games on lower-end hardware, allowing for a wider audience to enjoy the latest games.

Overall, DirectX 12 is an important update to a technology that has become a cornerstone of modern gaming. Its improved performance, efficiency, and flexibility mean that game developers and gamers alike can look forward to better, more immersive gameplay experiences.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
