As a regular Android phone user, you may have heard of the term APN. An APN, or Access Point Name, is a configuration setting that allows your phone to connect to the internet using your carrier’s network. However, sometimes your phone may not be able to connect to the internet due to wrong APN settings, or you may need to change the APN settings to get better internet speeds. In this article, we will answer the question, What is an APN and how do I change it on my Android phone?

What is an APN?

As mentioned earlier, an APN is a setting that your phone uses to connect to your carrier’s network. It consists of various details such as the name of your carrier, the data network type (3G, 4G, or LTE), and the URL of your carrier’s gateway. When your phone connects to the internet, it connects to your carrier’s gateway, which then connects it to the internet.

In simple terms, an APN is like a bridge between your phone and the internet. It helps to authenticate and establish a connection to the carrier’s network so that you can access the internet.

How to Change the APN on an Android Phone

If your phone is not connecting to the internet, the APN settings may need to be changed. Here’s how to change the APN on an Android phone:

Step 1: Go to your phone settings by tapping the gear icon.

Step 2: Click on Mobile Networks.

Step 3: Click on Access Point Names (APN).

Step 4: Click on the current APN and you will see the current settings.

Step 5: Click on the option to add a new APN.

Step 6: In the fields, enter the new settings that you got from your carrier. These include the carrier name, APN name, proxy, port, username, and password.

Step 7: Click on save to update your APN settings.

After saving your new APN settings, restart your phone and try to connect to the internet. If all goes well, you should now be able to connect to the internet with the new settings.

Conclusion

An APN is like a passport to the internet. Without the right APN settings, your Android phone won’t be able to access the internet. If you have been struggling with internet connectivity issues, then you may need to change your APN settings. Changing the APN on an Android phone is a straightforward process, as outlined above. With updated APN settings, you should be able to get better internet speeds and use your phone to its full potential.
