A domain name is like your digital home address. It acts as an identifier for your website and helps users find you on the World Wide Web. You can think of it as a brand name that people can easily remember and associate with your website.

In simple terms, a domain name is a unique string of characters that comes after the “www” part of a website’s URL. It usually appears in the form of a “www.mywebsitename.com” or “www.mycompanyname.net” format. These names are registered through domain name registrars and have to be available before you can use them for your website.

Here are 5 straightforward examples that explain what a domain name is and how it works:

1. Google.com – Google’s domain name is easy to remember, short and catchy. It is one of the most visited website in the world and its domain name has been an integral part of the company’s branding strategy from day one.

2. Amazon.com – Amazon’s domain name is also simple and easy to remember. It is a household name and has become synonymous with online shopping worldwide.

3. Facebook.com – Facebook’s domain name is simple, straightforward and easy to remember. It reflects the company’s philosophy of connecting people all over the world.

4. Wikipedia.org – Wikipedia’s domain name is unique and its “org” extension indicates that it is a non-profit organization. It is a popular website that provides free and accessible information to millions of people around the world.

5. Airbnb.com – Airbnb’s domain name is a clever combination of the words “air” and “bed”. It is creative and memorable, and reflects the company’s mission of providing unique travel experiences.

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech.
