What Do Router AC Ratings Like AC1200 and AC3200 Mean?

As the demand for high-speed internet access continues to grow, people are searching for the most efficient and effective routers available in the market. To make the process of selecting a router easy for customers, router manufacturers have begun to advertise AC ratings on their routers. However, many customers are not familiar with what these AC ratings mean and how they impact the performance of the router. In this article, we will be exploring what router AC ratings like AC1200 and AC3200 mean.

The term ‘AC’ here stands for 802.11ac, which is the fifth-generation Wi-Fi standard. It is the successor of the 802.11n protocol and is designed to improve the speed and range of Wi-Fi signals. The routers that come with this standard can support multiple devices simultaneously, providing users a faster and more reliable connection. The AC rating represents the total theoretical bandwidth of the router. The higher the AC rating, the greater the theoretical speed of the router.

The first number in the AC rating represents the speed of the router on the 5GHz band, while the second number is the speed of the router on the 2.4GHz band. The 5GHz band provides faster data transfer rates and is less congested than the 2.4GHz band. The 2.4GHz band, on the other hand, provides a longer range and better penetration abilities. Therefore, it is always recommended to purchase a router with dual-band support that can operate on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.

For instance, a router rated AC1200 is capable of delivering a total theoretical bandwidth of 1200Mbps, with 900Mbps on the 5GHz band and 300Mbps on the 2.4GHz band. Likewise, a router rated AC3200 can deliver a total theoretical bandwidth of 3200Mbps, with 2600Mbps on the 5GHz band and 600Mbps on the 2.4GHz band. It is important to understand that these theoretical speeds do not guarantee actual speed as they depend on various factors like distance, interference, and the number of devices connected to the router.

In conclusion, router AC ratings like AC1200 and AC3200 are important factors to consider when selecting a router. They reflect the total theoretical bandwidth the router can provide and the speed of data transfer on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. However, it is important to remember that these theoretical speeds do not guarantee the actual speed, and various factors can affect the performance of the router. Customers should always evaluate their specific needs and consider other factors like range, security, and brand reputation before making a purchase.
