HOW Design University 

What It Is: How Design University (How U) offers free and paid online lessons on graphic and interactive design, web design, intellectual property rights, and Adobe courses. It also has opportunities for those who would like to teach. This website can also be an enhancement or review course for those who want to be refreshed and improve in design online.

HTMLDog 

What It Is: HTML, CSS, and JavaScript are the common languages used in making web pages. HTML Dog is specifically focused on teaching these languages in 9 courses plus web development tutorial techniques, examples, and references. This one-stop website can be your way to review and master the art of coding.

Skillcrush 

What It Is: Skillcrush offers professional web design and development courses through a modular approach learning modality. It aims to educate individuals who are interested in the field, regardless of their background for a potential job landing in the future. They offer short, easy-to-consume modules and 3-month Career Blueprints to help students prepare for their chosen priorities.

Hack Design 

What It Is: Hack Design is another learning resource of lesson plans of 50 units packed with tutorial videos and articles in the field of design. These lessons and courses were put together with the help of several dozen designers around the world by curating multiple valuable sources all free of charge. Also, Hack Design has interactive content and awesome design tools for students.

General – Children and Adults

E-learning for kids  

What It Is: E-learning for Kids offers free courses for elementary school children ages 5-12. These free courses cover curriculum topics including math, science, computer, environment, health, language, life skills, and others. Integrated gaming and learning together for more engagement. Their courses are offered for free to elementary schools.

GCF Learn Free 

What It Is: GCFLearnFree.org offers courses over 1,000 lessons and 125 tutorials available online at any time, from computer software, basic skills on computer and gadget technology, internet skills, browsing, career readiness as well soft skills.GCFLearnFree.org is a project of Goodwill Community Foundation and Goodwill Industries.

Stack Exchange 

What It Is: StackExchange is one of several dozen Q+A sites that help people find answers related to multiple topics. Stack Overflow on the other hand is related to computer technology. This website houses a growing community who are willing to share the technical language. Their products and tools, Stack Overflow for Teams, Stack Overflow Advertising, Collectives™ on Stack Overflow, and Stack Overflow Talent help in empowering people to use technology at home.

Howcast 

What It Is: Howcast is a website of answers to the hows of life. Their posts cover general topics on lifestyle, crafts, cooking, entertainment and parenting, and more. It is a good resource for self-help and educational purposes.

SchoolTube 

What It Is: SchoolTube is a video-sharing platform for K-12 students and their educators, with registered users representing over 50,000 schools and a site offering over half a million videos. Their shared contents range from a wide variety of subjects in Math, Science, EdTech, History, and Music.

creativeLIVE 

What It Is: CreativeLive has an interesting approach to promoting creativity amongst learners. It offers workshops on creative and lifestyle topics such as photography, art, music, design, people skills, entrepreneurship, etc. There is also live access typically offered free and on-demand access requiring purchase. CreativeLive believes that no matter who and where you are, you are creative in your own way.

Do It Yourself 

What It Is: Do It Yourself (DIY) focuses on how-to’s primarily for home improvement, with the occasional tips on lifestyle and crafts topics. Families go to this site for troubleshooting and life hacks to maintain their homes and at the same time, develop resourcefulness and creativity.

Adafruit Learning System 

What It Is: Getting started with electronics is great for kids. Here at this website, we can have access to tutorials and fun projects for inspiration. But if you’re hooked by the Maker movement and want to learn how to make Arduino-based electronic gadgets, check out the free tutorials at the Adafruit Learn site — and buy the necessary electronics kits and supplies from the main site. Get your kids to create soon by learning the basics of electronics.

Grovo 

What It Is: If you need to learn how to efficiently use a variety of Web applications for work, Grovo has paid subscription, with free intro video tutorials on best practices for hundreds of Web sites. They also offer information about how Artificial Intelligence deploys content to people to develop their skills.

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.
