Ways to Fix Autocorrect Fails and Teach Your iPhone to Spell Properly
Autocorrect is a useful tool designed to help us type faster and more accurately. It often saves us from embarrassing mistakes and typos. However, at times, it can fail us by either changing words we typed correctly, or suggesting words that make no sense in context. These Autocorrect fails can be frustrating and inconvenient, especially when they happen frequently.
Fortunately, there are ways to fix Autocorrect fails and teach your iPhone to spell properly. Here are some tips to help you do just that.
- Turn Off Autocorrect
This is by far the most effective solution for Autocorrect fails. Turning it off will prevent any unwanted corrections from happening. Here’s how to do it:
a) Go to Settings > General > Keyboard
b) Then, toggle off the switch next to “Auto-Correction.”
- Edit Your Dictionary
Your iPhone keeps track of the words you use frequently and adds them to its autocorrect dictionary. This dictionary is what it references when suggesting words. If you find that Autocorrect keeps suggesting the wrong words, it’s possible that your dictionary is the problem. Here’s how to edit your dictionary:
a) Go to Settings > General > Keyboard
b) Tap “Text Replacement.”
c) Tap the plus sign in the top right corner.
d) Type the word or phrase you want to add and the shortcut for it.
e) Save and exit.
- Review Suggestions Before Accepting Them
Even with a perfectly edited dictionary, Autocorrect can still make mistakes. Be sure to take a few extra seconds to review the suggestions it offers before accepting them. If it suggests something that doesn’t make sense in context, delete it and try again.
- Use a Third-Party Keyboard
If you’re consistently experiencing Autocorrect fails, it may be time to switch to a third-party keyboard. Some popular options are SwiftKey, Gboard, and Grammarly. These keyboards have features such as predicted text and spell-check to make typing a lot smoother and stress-free.
