Ways TikTok Is Dangerous to Personal Privacy and Security

As TikTok continues to gain popularity around the world, it’s important to take a closer look at the app’s privacy and security risks. While TikTok may seem like harmless fun, the reality is that there are numerous ways the app can compromise your personal information.

Here are just a few of the dangers of using TikTok:

1. Data Collection: TikTok collects a significant amount of user data, including location information, device information, and browsing history. This data is then used to create a detailed profile of each user, which can be used for targeted advertising or sold to third-party companies.

2. Advertising: One of the most concerning aspects of TikTok is the app’s advertising practices. TikTok often displays ads that are targeted to specific users based on their behavior, preferences, and interests, which can lead to the collection of even more personal data.

3. Cyberbullying: TikTok has become a breeding ground for cyberbullying, with users often using the app to harass and humiliate others. This can have serious consequences for victims, who may suffer from depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues.

4. Child Safety: TikTok has come under fire for not doing enough to protect children from inappropriate content and sexual predators. Many parents are rightfully concerned about the app’s ability to expose their children to inappropriate material and people.

5. Malware and Scams: TikTok has also been linked to malware and scams, with many users reporting that they have received messages from fake accounts offering free gifts or asking for personal information. These scams can lead to identity theft and other serious consequences.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
