As a stage manager, you play a pivotal role in ensuring the success of a production. You are responsible for coordinating the various aspects that go into staging a production, from setting up the stage to cueing performers and running the show smoothly. To be effective in your role, you need to have great organizational skills, excellent communication, and detailed attention to scheduling. With the right tools and tips, you can easily use stage management to improve productivity and achieve a great performance.

Here are some of the tips that you can follow to use stage management effectively to increase productivity:

1. Create a detailed schedule: A well-detailed schedule outlining the activities and timelines for each segment of the production can significantly enhance your productivity. You can use a spreadsheet or stage management software to create a schedule that indicates the time slots for portraying each segment. Ensure that each segment is nicely designed and synced with potential photography instances and the actual occurrence of musical cues and dialog delivery.

2. Capitalize on checklists: Lists of tasks that need to be done before the show can help reduce confusion and improve productivity. Create an extensive and detailed checklist of the tasks that you need to perform before, during, and even after the performance. Prioritize the activities so that you can accomplish the most critical ones ahead of time to accommodate for unforeseen hiccups.

3. Simplify communication: Communication is an integral part of stage management. Being the bridge between different parties who are involved in the production as well as the cast and crew, stage management should strive to make communication simple and straightforward. Utilize mobile apps like Slack or WhatsApp that can efficiently channel communication to relevant parties. You can also centralize communication by using a bulletin board.

4. Coordinate with production staff: A production staff that is well-coordinated can achieve an outstanding performance that is punctual, precise, and in harmony with great timing. As a stage manager, you can provide necessary information, for example, about necessary props that the production staff can set up a minimum of one hour prior to a performance.

5. Rehearsal strategies: Rehearsals provide an excellent opportunity to fine-tune all aspects of the performance, and a pinnacle of chance to improve productivity. To make the most out of rehearsals, capitalize on the practice sessions by embarking on a detailed run of sequence and timing. Emphasize on music, voices, and mic’ control to reduce delay.

When it comes to stage management, it is crucial to remember that it is ultimately you who determines how a performance runs. By utilizing these tips, you can use stage management as a tool to enhance productivity, improve communication, and ultimately deliver an outstanding performance. Proper allocation of resources, effective communication, and strictly following a routine will allow you to achieve the desired outcome, and wow the audience.
