These Small Towns in Tennessee Have the Best Historic Districts

Small towns dot the scenic landscape of Tennessee, each holding a charm that speaks to centuries of history etched into their historic districts. These townships offer a window into the past, inviting visitors and history buffs alike to explore the well-preserved architectural treasures and cultural heritage that define this Southern state. Among these small towns, some stand out for their exceptionally curated historic districts.

Firstly, Jonesborough, established in 1779, holds the title of Tennessee’s oldest town and boasts a historic district that seems suspended in time. With its well-preserved Main Street lined with antique shops, historical homes, and storytelling festivals, it’s a living homage to Tennessee’s pioneer days.

Franklin is another gem with its 16-block historic district that showcases beautiful Victorian architecture and Civil War-era homes. A stroll through downtown Franklin presents a rich narrative of the town’s involvement in the Civil War, particularly in the Battle of Franklin, which is considered one of the conflict’s bloodiest hours.

Next, Collierville claims a spot on the list with its charming town square and antique clock, often reminiscent of a Norman Rockwell painting. The district is not only aesthetically delightful but also replete with history ranging from pre-Civil War to turn-of-the-century developments.

Over in East Tennessee, Greeneville’s historic district tells two centuries’ worth of stories. It has connections to President Andrew Johnson and Davy Crockett, offering insights into early American politics and frontier life. Its carefully conserved buildings provide an educational yet picturesque experience.

Lastly, Rogersville’s heritage rounds out these notable Tennessee small-town destinations. Founded in 1775 and featuring Tennessee’s first post office along Main Street, Rogersville’s historic district includes numerous significant buildings like the Hale Springs Inn operating since 1824.

While modern development continues to press forward, these small towns in Tennessee maintain their historical significance by preserving their past within each square mile of their historic districts. They offer not only aesthetic beauty and charm but also serve as important custodians of Tennessee’s – and America’s – rich historical tapestry.
