The launch of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in 2017 was a masterclass in how to reinvent a beloved franchise while staying true to its roots. Nintendo’s rollout strategy for this game was carefully crafted to build anticipation and showcase the game’s revolutionary features.

The rollout began years before the game’s release, with Nintendo teasing a new, open-world Zelda game as early as 2013. This long lead time allowed anticipation to build to a fever pitch. Nintendo strategically released information over the years, each reveal stoking the fires of fan excitement.

What made this rollout particularly effective was how it highlighted the game’s departure from previous Zelda titles. Nintendo emphasized Breath of the Wild’s vast, open world and new gameplay mechanics, positioning it as both a continuation of the Zelda legacy and a bold new direction for the series.

The game’s marketing heavily featured the stunning visual style and the ability for players to approach challenges in any order they chose. This emphasis on freedom and exploration was a significant shift for the series, and Nintendo made sure that this was front and center in all promotional materials.

Nintendo also tied Breath of the Wild closely to the launch of its new console, the Nintendo Switch. By making Breath of the Wild a launch title for the Switch (while also releasing it for the Wii U), Nintendo created a must-have game that helped drive adoption of their new hardware.

The company leveraged its Nintendo Direct presentations to great effect, using these online events to showcase extended gameplay footage and reveal new features. This direct-to-consumer approach allowed Nintendo to control the narrative around the game and build a close relationship with fans.

In the weeks leading up to release, Nintendo ramped up its marketing efforts. They released a series of short videos highlighting different aspects of the game, from cooking mechanics to horse taming. These bite-sized previews were perfect for sharing on social media, further spreading awareness and excitement.

The rollout also included more traditional elements like hands-on demos at gaming conventions, giving players and journalists a taste of the game’s vast world. The overwhelmingly positive reception from these demos created a wave of positive press that built anticipation to a crescendo.

On release, Breath of the Wild was met with universal acclaim. It received perfect scores from numerous publications and went on to win multiple Game of the Year awards. More importantly, it reinvigorated the Zelda franchise and set a new standard for open-world game design.

The success of Breath of the Wild’s rollout lies in how it balanced nostalgia with innovation. Nintendo respected the series’ legacy while boldly pushing it in new directions. This approach not only pleased longtime fans but also attracted new players to the franchise.

The lesson from Breath of the Wild’s rollout is the importance of evolution in long-running series. By taking risks and reimagining what a Zelda game could be, Nintendo created a launch that felt both familiar and revolutionary, resulting in one of the most successful and influential games of its generation.
