The Best Way To Clean Wood Furniture – This Is How The Pros Do It

Cleaning wood furniture can enhance its appearance, extend its lifespan and maintain its value. When cleaning wood furniture, it’s crucial to use the right methods and products to avoid damaging the material. Here’s an outline of the best ways to clean wood furniture like a pro:

1.Dust Regularly: Use a soft, lint-free cloth or a microfiber duster to remove dust without scratching the wood. Dusting regularly prevents buildup that can scratch and damage the finish.

2.Choose the Right Cleaner: Use a cleaner specifically designed for wood furniture. For everyday cleaning, you can create a mild solution by mixing water with a few drops of mild dish soap. Avoid all-purpose cleaners as they can strip away finishes.

3.Soft Cloth is Key: Always use a soft, non-abrasive cloth to clean wood surfaces. Rough materials can leave scratches.

4.Wring Out the Cloth: The cloth should be damp, not wet when cleaning wood surfaces. Excess water can lead to water stains or damage the wood.

5.Wipe in the Direction of the Grain: To maintain the integrity of the wood, wipe in the direction of the grain as it helps protect the finish and look of the wood.

6.Use Polish Sparingly: Wood polish can add shine but use it sparingly as overuse can lead to buildup over time. Choose a wax-based polish as opposed to silicone-based, as silicone can seep into the grain and cause damage.

7.Protect from Sunlight and Heat: Prolonged exposure to sunlight and heat sources can fade and harm wood furniture, so use drapes or position furniture away from windows if possible.

8.Attend to Spills Promptly: Liquid spills should be wiped immediately with a dry cloth to prevent watermarking.

9.Deep Cleaning Occasionally: Every so often, your furniture may require deep cleaning—especially if there is sticky residue or wax buildup. In these cases, consider using a specialized wood-cleaning product but always test it on an inconspicuous area first.

10.Address Scratches and Damage: For scratches or damaged areas, use products like scratch markers or repair kits that are color-matched to your furniture’s stain.

11.Condition Wood: Like skin, wood can get dry; therefore, occasionally using an oil-enriched wood conditioner can help nourish and protect the finish, especially for more exotic woods.

By following these methods regularly, professionals ensure that their care helps maintain not just cleanliness but also preserves the beauty and life of their wooden furnishings for years to come.
