Variegated agaves are increasingly gaining popularity among gardeners and landscapers, particularly in the Southwest where their drought-resistant nature and striking appearance can truly be appreciated. These succulents, with their bold stripes and contrasting margins, become focal points in any arid garden design. Here’s a look at some of the best variegated agaves for Southwest landscapes:

Agave americana ‘Marginata’

Often referred to as the variegated century plant, ‘Marginata’ features bold yellow stripes running the lengths of each blue-green leaf. It’s one of the largest variegated agaves and makes a dramatic impact in any space.

Agave ‘Kissho Kan’

This smaller agave is treasured for its stiff, short leaves edged in creamy yellow. It’s an excellent choice for those who have limited space but want a dramatic effect from their plantings.

Agave angustifolia ‘Marginata’

Also known as the Caribbean agave, this species has narrow leaves with bright yellow edges. It’s more tolerant of cold temperatures than many other agave species, making it a versatile choice for Southwestern gardens that might experience occasional frost.

Agave victoriae-reginae ‘Variegata’

Rare and much sought after, this variegated version of the queen agave features white markings on green leaves. The compact size and symmetrical rosette shape make it perfect for containers or small-scale plantings.

Agave ‘Joe Hoak’

This spectacular hybrid is known for its artistic pattern of pale green stripes on a darker green background. The leaves have an almost painterly quality and bring a unique aesthetic to any collection.

Each of these variegated agaves offers its own unique benefits, from size and shape to color patterns and cold hardiness. When incorporating them into your Southwest garden or landscape, be mindful of providing adequate sunlight, minimal watering, and well-draining soil to ensure they thrive in the warm, dry climate. With proper care, these striking plants can offer years of enjoyment with relatively low maintenance.
