Porto, the charming coastal city in the northwest of Portugal, is renowned for its rich history, stunning architecture, and vibrant culture. Visitors to Porto can indulge in a variety of activities that are sure to make their stay unforgettable. Here are some of the best things to do when in Porto:

1. Visit Livraria Lello: One of the world’s most beautiful bookstores, Livraria Lello is famous for its Art Nouveau façade and a stunning staircase that is said to have inspired J.K. Rowling, who lived in Porto while she wrote parts of Harry Potter.

2. Explore Ribeira District: Wander through the picturesque streets of Porto’s riverside Ribeira district. Enjoy the colorful buildings, dine at traditional Portuguese restaurants, and take in spectacular views of the Douro River.

3. Taste Porto’s namesake drink at a port wine cellar: Porto is synonymous with port wine, and no visit is complete without touring one of Vila Nova de Gaia’s many port wine cellars for a tasting.

4. Cruise on the Douro River: Take a boat cruise along the Douro for a unique perspective on the city’s six bridges and terraced vineyards further upstream.

5. Admire São Bento Railway Station: The station entrance hall is adorned with twenty thousand splendid azulejo tiles that depict scenes from Portugal’s history.

6. Visit the Serralves Museum: Art aficionados should not miss this cutting-edge contemporary art museum set within a verdant park.

7. Climb Clérigos Tower: For panoramic views over Porto and beyond, climb the 240 steps up to the top of this iconic Baroque tower.

8. Experience Fado live: Discover the soulful sounds of Fado in one of Porto’s many music venues where you can experience this traditional expression of Portuguese culture.

9. Walk along Avenida dos Aliados: This grand boulevard is lined with impressive buildings and a perfect place to appreciate Porto’s urban landscape.

10. Soak up nature at Parque de Cidade: The largest urban park in Portugal offers a welcome escape with its lush landscapes, lakes, and walking paths.

11. Sample traditional dishes: Try local specialties like Francesinha (a hearty sandwich) or tripas à moda do Porto (tripe with white beans) in local taverns.

12. Visit Palácio da Bolsa: Tour this former stock exchange palace embellished with ornate 19th-century décor and marvel at its stunning Arabian Room.

With these suggestions, your trip to Porto promises to be rich with cultural discovery, culinary delights, and scenic enjoyment. Whether you’re wandering through ancient streets or sipping fine port wine by the riverfront, Porto provides travelers with experiences that linger long after they return home.
